Tri-Valley residents will have the opportunity to celebrate the one planet we all call home with several Earth Day volunteer opportunities and events happening across the region throughout the rest of the month.
While Earth Day is set for Wednesday (April 22), the Zone 7 Water Agency is getting a head start on celebrations with a free Earth Day Lawn to Garden Party taking place this Saturday (April 18) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Madeira Park in Livermore, which aims to “transform Madeira Park into a water-wise garden.”
“Join Zone 7 Water Agency and the City of Livermore for a fun and rewarding community workday as we transform a portion of Madeira Park into a beautiful, low-water landscape,” according to the Eventbrite event description.
The event will have participants help remove some of the lawn at the park by using sheet mulching technique, which they could then use with their own lawns at home. Sheet mulching is an eco-friendly way to kill weeds or grass by using wet cardboard and mulch.
According to an April newsletter from the agency, converting a lawn that uses up a lot of water to a more sustainable one will not only help conserve the region’s local water supply, it will also create a “beautiful, low-maintenance landscape” for residents.
“This free, hands-on event invites Tri-Valley residents of all experience levels to learn practical water-saving landscaping skills while helping enhance a local park,” according to the Eventbrite event description.
Participating residents will also learn about ways to convert a traditional sprinkler system into an efficient drip irrigation system, water-wise gardening techniques and information on the agency’s rebate program for lawn conversion.
“Celebrate Earth Day by investing in our planet — and your home,” the agency stated in the newsletter.
The Following day, the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District will be hosting its Earth Day Celebration event at Sycamore Grove Park.
According to the park district, the event — which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — will not only feature fun activities and crafts for kids and adults, but it will also feature volunteering opportunities to “help sustain our local ecosystems.”
“This Earth Day weekend, celebrate with the community while taking action to help protect our beautiful blue planet at Sycamore Grove Park,” LARPD officials wrote, inviting the community to participate in the event.
Additionally, there will be guided nature walks, an invasive plant removal activity and an orientation to the City Nature Challenge, which is a four-day international initiative where toward the end of April, cities across the world will collaborate in an effort to find and document plants and wildlife.
Residents can park at the Wetmore entrance of the park for $5 or they can park for free at the Independence Park parking lot on Holmes Street, officials noted.
The East Bay Regional Park District will also be hosting a myriad of Earth Day volunteer opportunities and activities throughout next week, including a Del Valle Regional Park shoreline cleanup in Livermore from 9 a.m. to noon next Saturday (April 25).
“Earth Day is a special day for the Park District, an annual reminder to cherish, preserve, and protect vital natural resources,” the regional park district stated in an April 14 press release. “It’s a reminder to celebrate the natural spaces we are so lucky to have right here in the East Bay and to renew a shared commitment to keeping them beautiful for generations to come.”

The city of Pleasanton will also be celebrating Earth Day and Arbor Day during a special event next Saturday at the Pleasanton Public Library.
This year’s event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., will highlight the importance of seeing every day as Earth Day by offering a variety of “family-friendly activities and resources designed to make sustainable living approachable, practical, and fun.”
“From waste reduction and conservation to tree planting and reuse, the event highlights simple ways residents can incorporate environmentally friendly practices into their daily lives,” according to an April newsletter from the city.
Local organizations aligned with the city’s Climate Action Plan will be present, attendees can participate in a clothing swap and the city will even allow people to take advantage of its document shredder in the administrative building located at 123 Main St. Additional activities include outdoor games, a stationary bike equipped with a blending device, and other hands-on activities for all ages.
To celebrate National Arbor Day, which is next Friday (April 24), the city will also host a free tree giveaway for Pleasanton residents. According to the city, a limited number of five-gallon trees will be available.
Advanced registration is required for the tree giveaway.
“Community members are encouraged to attend, learn, and take part in activities that support a more sustainable Pleasanton,” the city stated in its newsletter.
