Books for Samoan children

A local family who go to Samoa every year with a group who test young children for rheumatic heart disease is calling for members of the public to donate children’s picture books to help kids in Samoa build their English skills and develop a love for reading, according to a press release from Pleasanton resident Ken Mano.

According to the press release, the books will be gifted to those children being tested, most of whom grew up without any literature.

“Books open doors,” organizers said in the press release. “For these children, a single picture book can spark imagination, strengthen language skills, and create opportunities that last a lifetime.”

The book drive is currently accepting new or fairly new children’s picture books that are preferably in English and feature “bright, engaging, age-appropriate stories for children up to a 5th-grade reading level.”

“Community members are encouraged to look through their home libraries, classrooms, and bookstores for books that can be passed along to children who may be holding their very first book,” according to the press release.

The deadline to donate books is this Saturday (March 7). Residents can drop off their books anytime between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at M5 Services, a property management company located at 7020 Koll Center Pkwy., Suite 116.
