“The Tortoise and the Hare”, “The City Mouse and the Country Mouse” and other morality tales from ancient Greek storyteller Aesop are the heart and soul of a new children’s musical from the Las Positas College theater arts team.
“Aesop’s Funky Fables” is being performed the next two weekends at the Livermore community college’s Black Box Theater, billed as “an upbeat and colorful production that brings classic stories to life through music, humor and heart”.
Playwright and director Dyan McBride called the show “a bold mash-up of the past and present, written for cool kids and awesome families” in a press release from LPC ahead of opening day.
“I want people to laugh, dance, and forget any troubles for an hour as they watch the famous fables come to life,” McBride said. “Hopefully, there are important lessons to talk about in the car on the ride home or at lunch! Learning through theatre can be funny, fabulous, and heartfelt, and that’s what ‘Aesop’s Funky Fables’ strives to be.”
The play follows three scientists who must re-create fables by a time-displaced Aesop in exchange for a guided tour of ancient Greece – after botching their time-traveling experiment.
“Blending whimsical characters, lively choreography, and a creative approach to storytelling, the production remains true to the spirit of Aesop’s original fables while making them accessible and engaging for young audiences,” LPC officials said.
The play is designed for children between 4 and 12 years old and their families, according to LPC. Shows are set for 10 a.m. and noon this Saturday and next (May 2 and 9) and 11 a.m. this Sunday and next (May 3 and 10).
