Authorities have confirmed the identity of a man who died after his Tesla SUV was hit by a driver suspected of being intoxicated early last Sunday morning on the freeway east of Livermore.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau identified the decedent as 66-year-old Akram Ghazal from Tracy. The California Highway Patrol’s Dublin office previously reported that he was pronounced dead at the scene on eastbound Interstate 580 on the Altamont Pass.
According to the CHP, Ghazal was driving his black Tesla Model Y on I-580 west of Grant Line Road at about 4:45 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 21) when his SUV was rear-ended by a white Honda Accord.
The Honda’s driver, a 21-year-old Stockton man whose name has not been released, was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. CHP officers placed him under arrest and booked him into Santa Rita Jail after he was evaluated at a hospital for moderate crash injuries.
The deadly collision remains under investigation, and it was not immediately clear whether the 21-year-old had yet been formally charged by prosecutors. Anyone with information related to the case can contact CHP-Dublin at 925-828-0466 and ask for either investigating officer, A. Reyes or R. Purl.
