The San Ramon Valley Unified School District is set to be under new leadership in the next academic year, with the district’s current superintendent set to retire from the position at the end of the current school year and shift to an executive role with a national organization of school administrators.
The American Association of School Administrators announced on Feb. 22 that SRVUSD Superintendent John Malloy had been selected for a role as assistant executive director with the organization’s School Superintendents Association.
“It is a great privilege to serve AASA, and superintendents and educational leaders nationwide,” Malloy said in the AASA’s announcement. “Public education stands as a fundamental pillar of our nation, where leadership plays a pivotal role. I look forward to supporting amazing leaders, dedicated to profoundly influencing our students’ futures.”
SRVUSD Board President Laura Bratt sent out an announcement the same day about Malloy’s new position and his departure from the district at the end of the current year.
“On behalf of the School Board, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to Dr. Malloy for his unwavering dedication and leadership,” Bratt said. “We wish him all the best in his future endeavors, confident that he will continue to inspire and empower others wherever his journey may lead him.”
Bratt lauded Malloy’s four-year tenure with the district, calling the shift “bittersweet” and noting that he would be missed by the board of education.
“In his role as Superintendent, he has been a transformative leader, challenging both staff and students to think differently and lean into complex issues affecting our educational climate,” Bratt said. “He has fiercely advocated for equity, consistently pushing for fairness and inclusivity across all aspects of our District.”
The board is set for a special meeting next week to provide district staff with direction on recruiting Malloy’s successor, with Bratt saying that they were “committed to conducting a thoughtful and thorough search to identify the next great leader for our organization,” and to maintaining Malloy’s legacy with the district.
Prior to his time at SRVUSD, Malloy served for 15 years as superintendent of the Toronto District School Board in Canada, during which he was recognized as Canadian Superintendent of the Year.
The SRVUSD Board of Education is set to meet at 5:30 p.m. on Monday (Feb. 26) to discuss designating a search firm to lead the recruitment for Malloy’s successor. The agenda is available here.
