U18 Rage take Farwest Regional Championships
The U-18 Pleasanton Rage defeated the So Cal Blues 4-0 Sunday, to win the U.S. Youth Soccer Farwest Regional Championships in Lancaster, Calif. A persistent Blues team kept the Rage off the scoreboard until the 42nd minute, when forward Maddie Payne headed in the first of her two goals, off a cross from Carlee Payne (no relation). She also scored two goals the day before.
Ahsha Smith launched a 30-yard slice that bounced off the far post and in, for the Rage’s second goal, which got the crowd really buzzing. Smith’s goal capped a six-game consecutive scoring streak by scoring in every game.
The Rage defense also recorded their fourth straight shutout, led by Rachel McGlinchy, Ashlyn Mazur, Sammie Cloutier, Sophie Metz and standout Goalkeeper Maddie Fox.
In the quarterfinal game vs. Utah, forward Carlee Payne caught fire, blasting five Rage goals for a hat trick with an exclamation point. Prior to that game, the U-18 Rage was awarded the 2009 Far West Regionals Fair Play Award, a tribute to the good sportsmanship shown during the games by the players and coaches, as well as the parents along the sidelines.
The team will now represent Division IV at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships July 20-25 in Lancaster, Mass.
NorCal All-Stars go 4-1 in lacrosse festival
The Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association Under-13 All-Star team received great performances from four local players as they went 4-1 at the U.S. Lacrosse Association in Kings Island, Ohio recently.
Josh Miller of Pleasanton, as well as Wiley Bonham, Niko Souza and Daniel Aguilar of the Diablo Scorpions, were key members of the NorCal Grizzlies last weekend, as the team, made up of players from throughout Northern California, traveled across the country to take on some of the nation’s best junior lacrosse players.
Miller and Aguilar spilt time in the goal, holding their five opponents to only 12 goals over the five games at the Festival, both making a number of sensational plays in the cage. Souza played his trademark, hard-hitting style of defense throughout the tournament, often times taking out the oppositions top attackman. Bonham was one of the leaders of an offense which racked up 33 goals in five games. The hard-shooting lefty not only scored his share of goals, but set up a number of them as well with timely passes.
The lone loss was a 3-2 final against South New Jersey in a thriller.
