Although Foothill High School had home-court advantage March 14 as it took on Amador Valley High School, once Chris Sumerlin, a Foothill senior, beat Amador sophomore Luke Wagner at number one singles: 7-5, 6-2, it was Amador all the way.
Amador swept the next eight matches, chalking up a final score of 8-1. Aswin Kolady, Adam Wagner, Billy Warm, Harry Luce and Eric Nunn all won at singles in two sets. Doubles teams Will Wang-Go Okumura and Greg Vuoto-Raj Setlur each won in two sets, while the team of Justin Odisho-Brett Ciccarello bested the Foothill team of Jared Young-Shiv Sharma in three, scoring 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 to round out the Amador win. Nandor said, “I am very proud of the way the players on both teams played this match. Every player played with enthusiasm, skill and sportsmanship. The city of Pleasanton should be proud.”
On March 4, Amador clinched the tennis title at the Logan Invitational Tournament at James Logan High School in Union City. Playing four matches head-to-head, the top teams from throughout northern California displayed their skills. In the last round against James Logan, Amador’s Kolady, Adam Wagner, Warm, Will Wang, Nunn, Go Okumara, Ciccarello and Odisho scored victories, said Nandor. Earlier in the day, Luce, Vuoto and Setlur all posted key wins, led by Luke Wagner, who had long, emotion-filled battles with two of the top tennis players in northern California. Amador’s League record now stands at 3 and 1, 7 and 3 overall. Warm was named Amador’s March 17 tennis athlete of the week.
