Authorities and family have confirmed the identity of the Stockton man who died after crashing his pickup truck into a tree alongside Foothill Road near Sunol this summer.

Family identified the 39-year-old as Saul Joshua Loyola — although the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau reported his first name was Joshua.

“Saul was a loving son, brother, friend and father who touched the lives of everyone around him with his humor, his wild stories and dreams. His willingness to help anyone in need and his love for his family,” Loyola’s family wrote on a GoFundMe page, which raised more than $11,000 in its call to help with funeral and other costs associated with the unexpected death.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash was reported at about 10:25 p.m. Aug. 26 on unincorporated Foothill Road just outside of Sunol. A Chevrolet Silverado struck a tree on the side of the road.

The driver — later identified as Loyola — was found unrestrained and unresponsive in the cab, ultimately being pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP, which also reported finding alcohol bottles inside the truck. The circumstances of the fatal crash remain under investigation.
