A Los Banos man was killed after his pickup truck clipped the back of a dirt hauler and then overturned after hitting a roadside tree and light pole on northbound Interstate 680 between Fremont and Sunol on Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The deadly collision occurred at around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 20) on I-680 north of Sheridan Road. CHP dispatch began getting calls from motorists reporting the aftermath of a crash with a pickup upside down in the slow lane, according to Officer Tyler Hahn.

Arriving officers interviewed the other involved driver and were told that a 1992 GMC Sierra struck the back of a three-axle Peterbilt dirt hauler, according to Hahn. The pickup truck then veered up the dirt embankment next to the freeway, hit a tree and a light standard, and rolled over onto its roof.

The GMC driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected and pinned in the pickup, according to Hahn. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The man’s name has not been released yet.

The dirt hauler, a 45-year-old man from Union City, stopped just ahead of the crash site to wait for assistance, Hahn said. The surviving driver was uninjured.

The circumstances of the collision remain under CHP investigation.

Hahn said officers had not heard from any direct witnesses to the crash yet. Anyone who may have seen something can call the CHP’s Dublin office at 925-828-0466.

The emergency response and cleanup related to the crash impacted freeway traffic in both directions during the morning commute.
