A 12-year-old cyclist was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after his electric bicycle was struck by a vehicle at a prominent intersection in Dublin during the morning commute Friday, according to police.
The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers, Dublin Police Services Capt. Miguel Campos said in a press release. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
The situation unfolded just after 7:30 a.m. Friday (Aug. 16), with officers being called out for a report of a juvenile being hit by a motor vehicle, according to Campos.
Officers arrived to confirm that a 12-year-old boy was riding an e-bike westbound within the crosswalk of Fallon Road and Gleason Drive when he was struck by a vehicle driving southbound on Fallon Road, Campos said.
The boy, who was wearing a helmet, sustained minor abrasions and was taken to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland for treatment, the captain said.
Police declined to reveal the names of the driver and the boy at this stage of the investigation. Campos said it did not appear that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
When asked about the crash on Friday afternoon, Dublin Unified School District director of communication Chip Dehnert offered a reminder for all parties to be cautious when traveling around school zones, especially during arrival and departure times.
“Adults and children need to exercise extreme caution when walking, biking, or driving in and around school zones,” Dehnert told the Pleasanton Weekly. “Parents must remind their children to be cautious, use crosswalks with crossing guards, and wear helmets for biking or scootering. Drivers need to reduce speeds, stay alert, and, above all, remove distractions. Pedestrian safety — child or adult — requires a serious commitment from all parties.”
The cause of the crash is under active investigation by Dublin police. Campos said anyone who may have witnessed what transpired should contact the department at 925-833-6670.
