The stage is set for a competitive race to usher in new blood for the Sunol Glen Unified School District Governing Board.
Four newcomers are running for two at-large seats on the school board that oversees the small-town district serving students in transitional kindergarten through eighth grade on a single school campus on Main Street in Sunol. Incumbents Peter “Ted” Romo and Chris Bobertz did not seek reelection.
The candidates competing for the seats – and hoping to become part of a new majority on the three-member board – are parent and cybersecurity professional Gagan Bassi; businesswoman and grandmother Jennifer Kavouniaris, who previously ran for the Fremont school board with the backing of Moms for Liberty; retired investment strategist Karen Ruth Newcomb; and retired Contra Costa College STEM dean René Turnbull.
Former Sunol trustee Linda Hurley, who was removed from office midterm in 2024, also filed for the election but was not listed among the final candidates on the ballot by the Alameda County Registrar of Voters’ Office after the Aug. 12 deadline. Hurley did not respond to the Pleasanton Weekly’s request for comment on why she wasn’t on the list.
The district made headlines across the Bay Area two years ago when voters recalled Hurley and fellow trustee Ryan Jergensen in the aftermath of their stance against flying the LGBTQ+ Pride flag on the flagpole in front of Sunol Glen School.
