The summer baseball for Tri-Valley all-star teams came to an end last Saturday when the Tri-Valley 14-year-old Babe Ruth team fell 9-8 to host Eagle Pass, Texas in the semifinals of the Babe Ruth World Series.

Tri-Valley advanced to the semifinals by beating Reedsburg, Wis., 12-1 in their final pool play game to earn the fourth seed for bracket play.

There, Tri-Valley beat the Caribbean rep for the second time in the tournament, this time by a 10-4 win. In the quarterfinals they beat a team from Tallahassee, Fla., 8-6.

Playing in front of a highly partisan crowd, Eagle Pass scored one in the first and then three in the second for a 4-0 lead

Tri-Valley stormed back and hung a four-spot on the board in the top of the third to tie the game. Eagle Pass went back in front with three in the fourth and a pair in the fifth for the 9-4 lead.

But instead of giving in, facing a big deficit in front of the partial crowd, Tri-Valley scored one in the sixth, then three more in the seventh before Eagle Pass ended the game, keeping Tri-Valley one run short of tying the game.

Knight advances to U.S. Amateur quarters

Former Foothill High elite golfer Brandon Knight advanced to the U.S. Amateur quarterfinals before falling.

The current University of Colorado golfer set a school record for the furthest a Buffalo golfer has advanced in the U.S. Amateur, which was played at the iconic Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., and the Philadelphia Country Club.

Knight, who won the California Interscholastic Scholastic title as a senior at Foothill, finished the stroke play portion of the Am tied with 21 other golfers for 33rd place at 1-over to qualify for the match play portion of the event.

In the round of 64 he opened with a 6-and-5 win over Connor Graham of Scotland.

In the round of 32, he edged Noah Kent of Naples, Fla., by a 3 and 2 final score. His 1-up win over Gaven Lane of Argyle, Texas in the round of 16 sent him to the quarterfinals.

Knight’s run finally ended when he fell 3-and-2 to Carter Loflin of Duluth, Ga.

Kropschot earns UFC contract

Joe Kropschot, who I wrote about two weeks ago, won his match in Dana White’s Contender Series and earned a UFC contract.

Kropschot, who grew up in San Ramon and now lives in Walnut Creek, had a fight Aug. 11 with Jon Kunneman in Las Vegas.

Kunneman, the betting favorite, came into the fight 10-0 and had yet to go the distance in a fight. Kropschot was riding a four-fight winning streak and had also not gone the distance in his 11-fight career.

Using his reach advantage and his front kicks, Kropschot kept Kunneman at bay throughout the fight, winning a 29-28, 30-27, 30-27 decision.

Kropschot nearly won by submission in the final 20 seconds after he got Kunneman in an arm bar, but Kunneman refused to tap out, even as Kropschot increased the pressure, at one point even causing White to cringe and cover his face.

Eventually, Kropschot dislocated the elbow of Kunneman just before the final bell sounded.

By winning his fifth straight Kropschot, impressed White enough to earn the UFC contract at the end of the five-fight card.
