The Amador JV girl’s tennis team took third place out of nine area teams at the Freedom Invitational Tournament, played Sept. 25 and 26 at Freedom High School in Oakley.

PJFL Cowboys take over first place

The PJFL Cowboys and Jaguars took to the field Saturday with one thing in mind — taking over the coveted first place spot in the ultra-competitive junior varsity division. The first quarter was dominated by the defensive units of both teams, but early in the second quarter, the Cowboys struck first with a 25-yard touchdown run by running back Jake Jackson, giving them the early 6-0 lead. Led by the stellar tackling of linebackers Hunter Robinson, Kollin Mass and Jacob Ebel, the Cowboys defense took to the field after the score and shut the Jaguars offense down for the rest of the first half.

But the Jaguars would not back down and came out in the second half on fire, tying the game in the third quarter. With the momentum on their side, the Jaguars defense shut down the Cowboys on their ensuing offensive possession and again went on attack on offense. But Cowboys free safety made a game-saving tackle on a 25-year TD pass. The Cowboys defensive line anchored by Robert Boxberger, Nick Brum, Tyler Nunnery, Jacob Wilson and Frankie Esparza came to life and reclaimed possession of the ball. The Cowboys went to work with a hard-nosed rushing attack highlighted by a 47-yard scamper by fullback Sean Maloney and then on their ensuing offensive possession Jackson took it to the house for his second TD of the day with a big 50-yard TD run, putting the Cowboys ahead 13-6. With just a few minutes remaining, the Cowboys defense shut down the last-minute passing attack of the Jaguars with timely defensive plays by cornerbacks Travis Adkinson and Alex Skowron and the Cowboys solidified their spot at the top of the PJFL JV standings.

BUSC U12 Rays top Rapids 2-1

Early last Saturday morning, the BUSC U12 Division 4 Rapids and the Rays, two undefeated teams, met for a test match. Both teams had previously won their games by large margins and were well matched. It wasn’t until one-third of the way through the first half before either team was able to put a score on the board. The Rays’ Joey Brasil passed the ball to Jordan Singh who fired the ball at Rapids Goalie Nate Gibson, who valiantly tried to stop the ball but the early morning dew made the ball wet and it slipped through his grip for a Rays lead, 1-0. The ball traveled the length of the field both ways for the remainder of the half both teams unable to score against the other until 30 seconds before the half when Rapids’ Jeffrey made a sweet pass to Damian Johnson who tucked it into the net on the right side to tie the game. After the half the battle continued with Shaun Kienhofer, Tyler Wineger and Timmy Wu leading the Rays defense. The Rapids also had strong defensive efforts. Both goalies Troy Bachand and Nate Gibson aquitted themselves well. Finally the Ray’s Jordan Singh kicked a corner to Kevin Yang who pounded the ball at the Rapid goal where, despite a Rapid defender trying to deflect the shot with a header, the ball found the upper right hand portion of the net. The Rays were fortunate to win the day 2-1.

BUSC U19 Advance come up short over the weekend

For the first of two games last weekend, the BUSC U19 Advanced team came up one goal short after one was taken away and Castro Valley United put one in at the 89th minute. U19 Advanced dominated the full game with a very solid second half. BUSC served up twice as many shots on goal but did not make the net. Michael Fontana, Luis Castillo, Titus Norton and Max Delaney made shots on. Spencer Miller held a strong mid and defense position sending on-the-mark passes to the forwards.

In Sunday’s game, U19 Advanced held off the Rockridge Sting for the first half. U19 Advanced’s keeper, Adam Johnstone, was busy saving at least a dozen goals but the team did not succeed in the end. Commendable play by Sam Onojafe, Jack Rogers, Kevin Briggs.

BUSC U12 Premier dominate Mission Valley/Fremont 6-0 The BUSC U12 Premier scored a victory over Mission Valley/Fremont Saturday morning.

In the opening minutes of the game, Jeffrey Klei scored from distance with a powerful shot. Nathan Esparza then scored off of a Jackson Still cross. Tylor Silva scored Ballistic’s next goal with a nice follow-up, kicking in a rebound off of the keeper’s hands. Mitchell Wilson had a beautiful header clearance in the box to preserve the shut out. Amid chaos in the area, Carson Paynter controlled the ball placing it in the corner of the net, making it 4-0 at the half.

Cameron Ritchie began the second half much like the first, with a goal in the opening minute. Bryce Veit capped the Ballistic scoring with a penalty kick winner, to end the game at 6-0.

The U11 Rage Premier team won their second state cup match 3-1 against the San Ramon Blue Crush. The Rage scored two goals in the first half, a beauty by Jo Salinas and another by Sarah Broacha that came from an outstanding assist from Sam Frost. Ariana Nino and Haley Okumura played excellent defense, as did goalie Juliet Allen who had some very nice long kicks to help keep the Crush away from the Rage goal. The second half saw the Crush come back with a goal only to be answered back by the Rage’s Ariana Nino who scored a goal off another assist from Sam Frost. The Crush was then shut down by the defense of Tiara Lewis, Lorna Roberts and Amy Schoendienst.

It was a heartbreaker up in Walnut Creek as the U11 Premier team lost their first league game of the season to the Explosion 3-2. Although the first half was equally dominated by both sides the Explosion were able to capitalize on a Rage foul resulting in a PK and later scored on a nice breakaway. The Rage came exploding back in the second half keeping the ball consistently in forward play thanks to Amy Schoendienst, Sarah Broacha, Sam Frost and Lorna Roberts, through their efforts and two beautiful assists from Jo Salinas and Ryan Murphy. Shanece Hunsaker positioned at the net was able to pop the ball in for two goals. Ariana Nino was spectacular on defense throughout the game and with help from Tiara Lewis, Haley Okumura and keeper Juliet Allen who had a few very close diving saves the Explosion were kept from scoring until the last few minutes. Forward Ryan Murphy had a great shot on goal which unfortunately instead of tying the game bounced off the post sending the Rage home with their first loss.

Ashley Jenezon and Charlie Garcia scored the final 2 goals when they blasted the ball over the keepers head from the 20 yard line. Forwards Alexa Espinosa, Cassie Scroggins had a great game while midfielders Haley Paxton, Erin Schoendiesnt, Jillian Beck, did a fantastic job distributing the ball. The Select team scored again in the 29th minute of the second half to finish the match with a 3-1 victory. Goals were scored by Chris Goldhawk (2) and Mason Picone (1). Assists were provided by Brian Kinnee and Pierre Marie. Goldhawk’s second goal was unassisted. Mathew Teng led the offensive attack with six shots on goal with Dylan Tuell playing aggressively in the middle of the pitch until he was sidelined with a knee injury for the remainder of the weekend. The defense rose to the occasion by turning away the Dublin attack with a total of 31 clears by Chris Klahr, Sammy Hanson, Tomas Rozsa, Lucas Warzyniak and Mathew Teng. The transition zone was controlled by Reed Marques and Joshua Cole. Andrew Griehshammer limited Dublin to one goal in his keeper position while turning away six shots on goal.

The Newark game began with Arsenal scoring in the first minute of play. But, the Select team didn’t allow that to take them out of their game plan and responded with 6 unanswered goals over the next 41 minutes of the match. The boys were relentless in their offensive attack with six different players finding the back of the Arsenal net. Goals were scored by Andrew Griehshammer, Mathew Teng (a header), Roberto Beard, Pierre Marie, Brian Kinnee and Mason Picone (2, with the second goal a header). BUSC U16 Select struggle, but pull out 2-0 win

The BUSC U16 Select have been on a good run lately, but realize that every game cannot be an artistic success. This one was no Picasso, but the Select did what they had to pull out a 2-0 win over Fremont Saturday. With a short bench due to various reasons, the Select had an improvised lineup with several changes of position. This showed in the early stages and the passing and ball handling that is their trademark was missing. As the combinations kept coming, finally the Select had a flurry where they were raining shots but without success, going wide, high, off crossbars, and being saved.

In the second half, another switch of formation necessitated by having no subs found the Select to start to find openings in the Fremont defense. Finally, in the 66th minute, the Select grabbed the lead. Jared Shofi turned the corner on the right and sent a low, hard pass into the box. Nick Bayley scored for the second game in a row, redirecting the ball beautifully into the back of the net. Fremont pushed hard for the equalizer, but Ballistic began to regroup behind the ball and look for opportunities. Randy Copeman, who had another stellar game at central back, took a run through the middle of the field and created a dangerous opportunity for the Select, but they were turned away. Abe Barreras stepped into the right back slot and held his mark, the Fremont target player, scoreless. And finally, the persistence paid off. The Select knocked the ball around until they caught Fremont with numbers up. Brandon Cohen sent Bayley on net. As he fired near post, the Fremont GK made a nice save but gave up a rebound. Joe Lee was in the right place and blasted it into the back of the net in the 79th minute. GK Lukas Moses, who had to make a couple of tight saves in the second half, directed the last bit of the clean sheet for the 2-0 final. The Select are now 13-3-2, 6-0-0 in league.

Rage U15AC narrowly defeats Hayward International

Cooler heads prevailed as the Rage U15 AC team overtook the Hayward International Sunday 2-1. Haley Jackson scored the first goal off a PK to the lower right corner. In the second half, Haley followed up with a second goal. The Rage defense consisting of Nicole Bardakos, Meredith Jaeger, Christina Choing and Sammy Williams held off the Hayward offense for most of the game. Defending the goal were keepers Madi Beatty and Kasey Jensen, both playing exceptional halves.

Rage U16D3 leave Strikers awestruck

The Rage U16D3 Orange left the Fremont Stikers awestruck with a constant barrage of offensive thrusts that resulted in a 3-0 victory Sunday. Danielle Homan setup the first and last goals with excellent corner kicks that resulted in a nifty header from Katey Cloonan and a strong, left-footed boot from Delaney Holmes. Sandwiched between those two scores were an impressive run by Holmes after a throw-in that ended with a strike from the right side that found the back of the net. Megan Smart’s strong play anchored a defense that did not allow a goal for the fourth time this season.

Rage U14 Orange fail to capitalize

Rage U14 Orange started the weekend against Mustang Tigers. Rage forward Courtney Seams scored on the initial kick-off with assists from Olivia Deutschman, Kayla Bautista, and Lindsay Curlett. The Tigers’ first goal occurred when a corner kick slipped past the RAGE goal post defense. The Tigers’ second goal occurred on a Rage defense deflection and rolled into the goal. Rage had two good opportunities to score when midfielders Claire Williams and Kayla Bautista both dropped high arcing passes three feet out from the center of the Tigers’ goal, but Rage forwards could not capitalize. Fullbacks Olivia Deutschman and Katie Oross made two goal-saving stops. Rage finished the weekend against the Mustang Stampede. The Stampede scored the only two goals of the game. Fullbacks Laura Morgan and Katie Oross prevented multiple fast Stampede breakaways. Goalie Nikki Costello made two good stops.

Rage Grey U12 go 1-1 over weekend

After allowing Dublin Celtic United to score two goals first, U12 Rage Grey dominated the rest of the game last Saturday with goalie Sabrina D’Ambrosio making great saves. Jenna Crawford led the scoring by drilling the ball into the net from the midfield twice. Avery Jones also sailed one into the net. Darcy Kron and Bailey Sanchez moved the ball skillfully in the midfield. Liliana Tierney and Miranda Spring were solid in defense.

The Livermore Force beat Rage 2-0 Sunday, despite outstanding goal keeping by Dalia Shafi and tough defensive efforts by Justine Kamen and Megan Shackley. Taylor Clopton, Taylor Campbell, and Kailyn Coleman were aggressively moving the ball up the field, but the Force’s goalkeeper was flawless.

Rage Grey U9 shut out Sabercats 1-0

Pleasanton Rage Division 4 for Saturday October 10, 2009.

AGE GROUP: U14

It was a fast start to the Rage Division 4 U14 game when Alexa Hansen tried to score from right side of net. Zoe Zimpher, playing midfield, battled for possession and brought it back to our offense, not once but twice. Shayna Doyle on defense helped stop the ball in its tracks and sent it flying back to offense. Juliet Logan sliced it past front of goalie to her offensive teammates but a battle for possession bunched up and prevented scoring. Opposition scores when there is a push call and they get a free kick. Maddie Jackson as goalie saves us. Juliet runs the ball up sidelines but Vortex’s momentum comes to a halt when offensive player gets injured. Second half depends on Shayna Doyle defensive moves that blocks Zoomboomafoo enabling Cassidy Holmes to send the ball flying over the goalie’s head from about mid field and almost scores. Our goalie MJ see’s a lot of action this half. Alexa Hansen and MoMo Iversen keep pressure on as offense but can’t find a break being overpowered. Finally, a call in our favor for a free kick by Karah Paul that opposition goalie stops it cold.

Highlights: Streaks were destined to end when the Rapid and Rays collided in a clash of unbeaten, unscored-upon teams – a 2-1 Rays tug of war ultimately decided by stingy defense, gallons of sweat and a dash of luck. The Rays broke a 20-minute deadlock when a shot skipped across the damp grass, then squirted through the Rapids goalie’s smothering dive – to trickle across the goal line in agonizingly slow motion. The Rapids knotted the game just seconds before the end of the half when Jeffrey Deguchi willed his way between defenders on the right flank, then chipped a short centering pass to Damian Johnson for a tap back into right corner. The game-deciding goal came just moments into the second half, when the Rapids goalie and a defender converged on a ball lofted across the goal, but the defender’s attempt to head the ball to safety deflected just past the goalie’s reach and into the goal. The rest of the game was punctuated by a Rays shot off the post, a Rapids penalty kick that caromed off the crossbar, Brandon Larson’s two 50-yard dashes to chase down and kill Rays breakaways, Amit Nagdev’s willingness to fling himself into traffic to make steals, Zak Sonnenschein and Michael Schwanhausser anchoring a relentless defense that allowed only nine shots, goalie Nate Gipson’s alert, diving plays from one end of the goal box to the other, and the non-stop offensive hustle by forwards Deguchi, Johnson and Tyler Kline.
