Seahawk swimmer wins Tiburon open water swim **with pic**

On Sept. 13, Rachel Knowles competed with 400 polar bear types (8 to 75 years old) in the 10th annual Tiburon Mile in San Francisco Bay, finishing first in the open water swim in the 13 & under category.

Decked out in a thin swim suit, goggles and double swim caps anchored with duct tape, the 12-year-old who swims for the Pleasanton Seahawks swam against the chilly 50-something degree current from Angel Island to Tiburon Harbor. In preparation for the race, Knowles has competed in multiple open water swims. When asked what was the most difficult part of the race, she answered, “The start, there were so many swimmers that people were grabbing your feet, kicking and even swimming over you.”

She said that when the swimmers left the bay, they were hosed off and the cold water felt “like a hot shower.”

“The best part of the experience was finishing and running on the red carpet at the finish line,” she added.

Rage U12 Premier top Rockers 5-0 **with pic**

The matchup against the Mill Valley Rockers saw Rage U12 Premier playing their aggressive, attacking, possession game that was so successful the opening weekend. Carley Robertson scored three goals Sunday, with assists from Christy Jensen and Brookey Villanueva, helping the team to a 5-0 win. The other two goals were scored by Malissa Shadle, with an assist from Makenna Elias, and by Julia Densmore. The defensive play of Jasmine Dessouky, Eilis Hegarty and Hannah McGillivray, anchored by goal keeper Sophia Brown, produced the second shut-out in as many weeks.

In addition to her play on the field, Dessouky made a wonderful save while the keeper was down. (RAGE Photo Info: Christy Jensen [center, with ball], Carley Robertson [right]. Photo taken by Paul LaBella)

BUSC U12 Premier rally for win against Turlock

Trailing 1-0 at the half to a well-organized Turlock Scorpions team, the BUSC U12 Premier rallied back to defeat the Scorpions 3-1 Sunday.

Jeffrey Klei began the comeback with a direct kick goal from just outside the top of the area. Jackson Still scored Ballistic’s next goal with a lovely inward bender corner kick that snuck in underneath the keeper’s hands, and Cameron Ritchie sealed the victory with a penalty kick conversion.

Once again Ballistic’s defense was on top of their game, with Mitchell Wilson and Geoffrey Wiederecht taking charge.

Rage U16AC tallies second shutout against opponents

The Rage U16AC dominated Diablo FC 93 for a 3-0 win Saturday at the Sports Park. Rage got on the board early when Erin O’Loughlin scored off a great cross by Cassie Scroggins. The second goal came when Haley Paxton sent a pass to Abigail Moore who took a couple touches, then blasted it just under the crossbar. The stout defense of Lindsay Rigel, Molly Rowse, Stephanie Little, Charlie Garcia and keeper Shannon Easley contributed to the second Rage shutout.

U16 Select dominate Newark in 5-0 victory

The U16 Select traveled to Newark Sunday and unleashed a devastating offensive attack in putting together a 5-0 victory over the Rebels. The Select first got on the board in the 13th minute off a pass from midfield by center back Randy Copeman, who had a tremendous game defensively. In the 20th minute Abe Barreras, who also had a terrific game, streaked down the left side and sent a true cross to Lorentz planted inside the eighteen for the score and the team was ahead 3-0 by the half. Yashar Benham finished in net and kept the shutout with a save in the 80th minute of the game, and the 5-0 win.

Rage U11 Premier sail to victory over Flames Saturday

The Rage U11 Premier team posted another convincing win on Saturday the 19th with a 4-1 victory over the Diablo Flames. In the very first minutes of the game Haley Okumura scored a beautiful goal off of a great assist from Sam Frost. The first half the Rage held 1-0 with excellent defense coming from Ariana Nino, Amy Schoendienst and Tiara Lewis. Sarah Broacha had a brilliant defensive header and goalie Juliet Allen more than once slid in on the ball saving a few close ones.

Early in the second half the Flames scored, but very quickly the Rage answered back when Jo Salinas kicked the ball from a distance and scored the Rage’s first goal of the second half. Shanece Hunsaker was able to tap the ball in off of a well set up play by Ariana Nino and Haley Okumura. The fourth goal for the Rage came as a penalty kick, when Sam Frost kicked the ball perfectly past the Flames goalie.

The team posted another win Sunday, this time against the Mustang Strikers. It was a shutout for the Rage who won 3-0 in spite of the extreme heat.

Lamorinda battle it out with Rage U14AC, winning 2-1

Rage U14AC played the first half of the game with respect for Lamorinda United 95 team, who defeated them in the Cherry Island tournament a few months ago 4-0. Lamorinda took advantage of that and possessed the ball most of the time. A brilliant performance of Rage’s goalie Olivia Brown and her brave saves in three occasions frustrated Lamorinda’s forwards, allowing Rage to keep the result at 0-0, later topping them 2-1. The second half started in the same pace and Lamorinda scored, by their best player, for the lead, but not for long. Rachel Reichenbach dribbled through three defenders and concluded with the equalizing goal. Evan Murphy passed a corner kick back to Marisa Riordan who crossed the ball into the box. Lamorinda’s goalie bounced the ball short and Molly Grozier was able to drill it into the net. The rest of the game was controlled by Rage players due to their good running and ball movement.

Offense strong, but Rage U9 fall to SaberCats

Despite nice offensive plays from Emily Ferrey, Jasmine Erickson and Abby Smith, the Rage U9 Black team couldn’t push one across, falling to the Mustang SaberCats 6-0 Saturday. Mollie McKay and Emily Esparza helped to control the midfield and support nice goal keeping from Emma Tsztoo and Erickson.

BUSC U16 fight hard for 1-0 win against Earthquakes

The BUSC U16 Select visited the Mustang Earthquakes and came away with a hard fought 1-0 victory Saturday. The Select dominated play in the first half regarding possession but could not close the deal. Jake Lorentz hit a screamer from point blank range in the 17th minute that the Quake GK bravely stood in for. Brandon Cohen hit the first of two posts on the day, and the Select was feeling a little snakebit. Their defense was stifling, with center backs Randy Copeman, Joe Lee, and Frank Morley taking turns stuffing the Mustang attack and sending the Select on counterattacks. Outside backs Eric Brooks and Chandler Bullock were stepping up hard into the offense, creating more pressure, but the half ended 0-0.

Select GK Lukas Moses wasn’t tested in the first half, but had to withstand several Mustang corners in the second. Finally, the Select broke through in the 75th minute. Bullock tucked in deep into the Quakes end and battled to keep the ball in their end. It ended up at Cohen’s feet, whose volley strike found the back of the net.

BUSC U19 Select score 13 goals in one weekend

The Ballistic United U19 Select scored 13 goals over the weekend, defeating Ballistic United Advanced on Saturday followed by a win over Mustang United on Sunday. In Sunday’s game against Mustang Alex Caravan slotted home a feed from Jaymi Van Dam in the 18th minute. Niko Lecco scored twice including a highlight reel goal on an assist from Keeper Josh Cho. Cho punted the ball past the Mustang defense, found Lecco who then chipped the charging keeper.

Rage U16D3 take stinger out of San Ramon

The Pleasanton Rage U16D3 Orange scored early and never looked back in defeating the San Ramon Stingers on Saturday at the Sports Park. Katey Cloonan scored the first goal of her hat trick by taking the opening kick-off and navigated through traffic to score the first goal in less than 15 seconds, pacing the Rage to its second consecutive 8-0 victory. Kiley Zieker and Sarah Machado scored impressive goals, with Kiley booting one from 20 yards at a sharp angle to the far post, and Sarah moving up from her usual defender position to send a shot over the goalie’s arms from over 35 yards out. Haley Boehmer and Jessie Hopson also scored. Carly Boehmer earned her second shutout in goal, providing leadership and direction from the rear. Megan Smart and Madison Nethery also provided strong efforts at defense and midfield, respectively.

BUSC U13 produce 53 shots on goal, but fail to convert

The BUSC U13 Division 3 Select team had two matches last weekend that were very challenging and showed there is work to be done in converting scoring opportunities into goals. The Select team produced a total of 53 shots on goal for both games and only converted four into scores. Their opponents were much more efficient with their goals to shots conversion rate with only 23 total shots on goal, creating six scores. Even though the BUSC boys out shot their opponents, their ability to finish an attack was lacking an acceptable performance level. The final outcome was a loss to Union City Chivas 3-1 and a tie to Danville’s Mustangs, 3-3, with the tying goal scored by BUSC in the 69th minute of the match.
