Foothill Goes to NCS Playoffs Undefeated
While all games, in all sports, between the cross-city rivals are special, last weekís football game between Pleasantonís two high schools was more extraordinary than most for Foothillís Head Coach Matt Sweeney. With his first undefeated and untied regular season on the line on the road at Amador Valley, Sweeney directed his student athletes to a hard-fought 23-7 victory over the Dons (7-3 overall, 3-3 EBAL). In a game that was indicative of Sweeneyís football philosophy, the Falcons out gained the Dons 348 to 120, with 235 of the yards coming on 50 punishing rushing attempts. Rob Andrews followed the beef up front for 145 yards and 3 TDs.The Falcons (10-0, 6-0) are now ranked 10th in the state by MaxPreps.com. The Falcons have been seeded second behind USA Todayís nationally ranked No. 1 team, De La Salle, for the NCS Class 4A playoff tournament.
The NCS Seedings for the Class 4A playoffs are: 1. De La Salle, 2. Foothill, 3. Deer Valley, 4. San Ramon Valley, 5. Monte Vista, 6. Pittsburg, 7. James Logan, 8. College Park.
In the first round of the 4A championships, Foothill will host 8-2 James Logan from Union City tonight at 7 p.m. at home. Foothill and James Logan have played three common opponents this season. Both teams scored impressive wins over Skyline and Washington High Schools. However, in a very early season non-league game Logan fell to Monte Vista 41-14 while Foothill defeated the Mustangs in perhaps their toughest game of the season, 28-21 back in late September.
