As part of a nationwide day of walk-outs, Livermore students protested downtown last Friday afternoon to condemn the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Dubbed #ICEWalkOut, the demonstration Jan. 30 at Livermorium Plaza drew hundreds of attendees from Livermore High School, Granada High School, East Avenue Middle School and Junction Avenue TK-8 School, according to LHS senior and campus organizer Greta Fick-Furlotte.
Fick-Furlotte said she was inspired to mobilize students at LHS because of frustration with the normalization of violence and harm.
“I also wanted the immigrant community to feel seen, valued and supported, especially at a time when so many people feel targeted or afraid,” she told Livermore Vine.
The protest by Livermore students was among hundreds of demonstrations nationwide, as communities grapple with ICE officials’ recent killings of Minneapolis residents and ongoing detainments across the country.
