Rallies are expected in the cities of Livermore and Dublin Thursday as part of a nationwide day of peaceful, nonviolent action in honor of late Georgia Rep. John Lewis and to defend civil and human rights.
Dubbed Good Trouble Lives On, the collective events July 17 are rooted in the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement and Lewis’ famous call to make “good trouble, necessary trouble”, according to host organizations Livermore Indivisible and Indivisible Tri-Valley.
Their demonstrations will be among more than 1,600 events confirmed nationwide for the fifth annual John Lewis National Day of Action and the fifth anniversary of his death, according to the country-wide organizing website for Good Trouble.
“Participants will gather to demand an end to the authoritarian attacks on our freedom to vote, protest, and organize — and to stand united against efforts to criminalize our communities, roll back our rights, and slash vital public programs,” officials from the local organizations said in separate statements.
In Livermore, organizer Livermore Indivisible is set to host community partners with information regarding additional ways to become involved in local issues. Donations will be accepted for nonprofit organizations including CityServe and Tri-Valley Haven for its pre-filled backpack drive. Voter registration will also be offered.
Poet, author, comedian and radio personality Faith Alpher is set to emcee the Livermore rally.
A few miles away in Dublin, the demonstration by Indivisible Tri-Valley is set to feature speakers including First Christian Church of Oakland pastor/theologian, Global Prayer Network founder and author Reverend Monica Cross; Alameda County Community Food Bank director of equity, access and belonging Sheila Burks as well as nurse and former candidate for Alameda County Board of Supervisors Jennifer Esteen. Singing will be led by Deetra Coleman-Olopade.
The rally in Dublin will also include fundraising and food collection for Tri-Valley Haven’s food pantry, voter registration as well as the making of armbands and signs.
“Together, we’ll remind them that in America, the power lies with the people,” according to the national Good Trouble website.
The demonstration Thursday (July 17) in Livermore is scheduled to take place from 5-7 p.m. at Livermorium Plaza and in Dublin from 6-7:30 p.m. at Dublin Civic Plaza.
