DUI checkpoint

The Pleasanton Police Department is set to conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint this Friday (Dec. 5) on Santa Rita Road between Rosewood and Pimlico drives.

According to a PPD press release, the checkpoint will run from 6 p.m. to midnight. Officers will be on scene to evaluate drivers for signs of intoxication.

“DUI checkpoints help reduce impaired-driving crashes by raising awareness and removing impaired drivers from the road,” PPD stated in the press release. “During Friday’s operation, officers will be looking for signs of alcohol or drug impairment, including impairment caused by certain prescription medications or marijuana — especially when combined with other substances.”

APAPA event

The Asian Pacific American Public Affairs Tri-Valley, a local nonprofit that supports and dedicates its time to promote the civic engagement of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, recently celebrated its transition to new leadership at the Dublin Senior Center on Nov. 14.

More than 40 local and regional elected officials attended the event. The nonprofit also spent some time highlighting the challenges that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders face in the Tri-Valley such as housing insecurity, mental illness and domestic violence.

“Every day, more and more leaders, from nonprofits to small businesses, step up to serve our region and keep folks from falling through the cracks,” Nathan Tran, co-president of APAPA Tri-Valley, stated in a press release. “We must bring our community together so every voice, especially the ones not in the room, is truly heard.”

Magical Holiday

The Pleasanton Downtown Association will be kicking off the holiday season with its annual Magical Holiday Evening this Friday (Dec. 5).

Members of the public will be able to take free photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, enjoy hours of live music and peruse through a “charming Christmas market” on Division Street that will be filled with local vendors.

There will also be a toy drive, festive craft tables and a hot chocolate bar, according to the PDA.

The event will last from 4-7 p.m. Musical performances from the Amador Golden Dons, the Pleasanton Ukulele Club, a handbells choir, a quartet and a blues group will be scattered throughout downtown at various locations and times.

Turf & Surf Sale

The Foothill Band Boosters, a nonprofit group of parents who look for ways to support the instrumental music program at Foothill High School, will be hosting its annual Turf & Surf Sale fundraiser at the school this Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 6-7) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Members of the public will be able to purchase select cuts of meat and seafood — to supply all of their upcoming holiday festivities — the proceeds of which will go toward the instrumental music and color guard programs and Foothill High.

Behind the Badge

The Pleasanton Police Department is accepting applicants for its Behind the Badge program, a nine-week course that offers an insider’s look at law enforcement in the city.

“Participants gain firsthand insight into police operations, learn about topics such as patrol procedures, traffic enforcement, crime scene investigation, and more — and discover how community involvement plays an essential role in effective policing,” city officials said. “Designed to strengthen connections between officers and the community, this program also serves as a gateway to volunteering opportunities with the department.”

Participants must be at least 18 years old, live or work in Pleasanton, and pass a background check. Learn more at cityofpleasantonca.gov.
