Welcome to the Playbook!

It is time for another week of the 2025-26 prep sports year! The Playbook takes you inside the East Bay Athletic League, writing about outlooks, updates and insights into all the sports, along with profiles of athletes, and opinions regarding controversial issues in high school sport.

The Big Picture looks at the first week of the North Coast Section football playoffs. Also read about the NCS water polo and the CIF State NorCal girls’ golf tournament.

EBAL Power Rankings features the final volleyball rankings of the season, as well as the latest football rankings. What to Watch has the schedule for the NCS football semifinals, as well as when and where the CIF State girls’ golf tournament is taking place. The Fast Five is taking a week off but will be back next week!

NCS football: Monte Vista gets revenge on Amador, sets up rematch with Cal in D-II semis

After its 24-14 win over Amador in the first round, Monte Vista advances to an all-EBAL semifinal at sections – playing host to California, a team the Mustangs beat 34-13 earlier in the season.


Power Rankings as of Nov. 18.

EBAL GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL (FINAL RANKINGS)

1. San Ramon Valley (26-11): The Wolves opened CIF NorCal D-I play with a 3-2 win over Oak Ridge but then fell to Woodcreek 3-0 in the second round.

2. Carondelet (28-9): The Cougars fell 3-1 to James Logan in the first round of the CIF NorCal D-I tournament.

3. Monte Vista (27-11):  The Mustangs fell 3-0 to Valley Christian-San Jose in the first round of the CIF NorCal D-I playoffs.

4. Foothill (25-9): Season is over.

5. Amador Valley (15-13): Season is over.

Others: California (11-13), Dougherty Valley (16-17), Granada (13-13), Dublin (8-20), Livermore (7-19).

EBAL FOOTBALL

Mountain Division

1. San Ramon Valley (6-5): Not often you can lose 42-0 and not drop from the top spot in the poll – but when the other team is De La Salle, it’s believable 

2. Monte Vista (6-5): The Mustangs redeem themselves with a 24-14 win over Amador Valley in the first round.

3. California (8-3): The Grizzlies get back to their winning ways with a 24-23 win at American Canyon.

4. Amador Valley (4-7): The Dons season comes to an end with a 24-14 loss at Monte Vista.

Valley Division

1. Livermore (9-2): The Cowboys were seeded No. 8 and went into top-seeded Campolindo and nearly shocked the D-II playoffs but fell 28-26.

2. Dublin (5-5): The Gaels fall 24-7 to El Cerrito to end their season.

3. Granada (6-5): The Mats get a 13-7 win over Deer Valley in the D-IV playoffs.

4. Foothill (5-5): Season over.

Note: De La Salle is not used in the rankings since they get the automatic berth from the EBAL. De La Salle (11-0) d. San Ramon Valley 42-0.


Tomorrow (Nov. 19) – CIF State Girls’ Golf: Poppy Hills Golf Course, Pebble Beach. All day. 

Friday (Nov. 21) – NCS Football: Open/D-I De La Salle vs. Pittsburg at DVC, 7 p.m. D-II semifinals: Clayton Valley at Campolindo, California at Monte Vista, both 7 p.m. D-IV semifinals: Granada at Hayward, Redwood at Miramonte, both 7 p.m.


Family of injured pole vaulter sues Pleasanton school district

PUSD is facing a lawsuit from a former Foothill High School pole vaulter and his family stemming from the serious spinal injury the teenager suffered at practice last academic year.

Despite a rough draw as the No. 7 seed, the Dons are in the tournament – and most importantly, they are as healthy as they have been all season.
