An Oakland man being held for murder in Santa Rita Jail in Dublin has been charged with killing his cellmate — who was being held for a separate murder.
Paula Faaui, 22, is accused of killing Elias Angel Rivera, 37, while both were inmates in the same jail cell, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.
Faaui activated an emergency call button just before midnight on March 17, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies found Rivera unresponsive with visible injuries. He was taken to a local hospital where he died at 1:11 a.m. on March 18.
Rivera had been arrested by the California Highway Patrol on May 21, 2022, the sheriff’s office said, after a wrong-way head-on collision on Highway 24 in Oakland that killed one person.
Faaui was arrested in the Aug. 20, 2023, death of Julian Carillo Garcia in the 5800 block of Bancroft Avenue in Oakland, according to a police press release at the time.
Carillo Garcia was found just before 6 p.m. with at least one apparent gunshot wound, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
