Flames raged through a set of empty commercial buildings in Livermore on Sunday evening, sending a major column of smoke billowing into the dusk sky and threatening an adjacent shopping center.

All told, three of the four vacant buildings in the 1500 block of Holmes Street were a total loss while the fourth was heavily damaged, according to Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department Chief Joe Testa. The fire did spread to the roof of a neighboring retail building that includes the Charming Fig among its tenants, causing some damage.

The first call came in just before 5:15 p.m. Sunday about buildings on fire just north of intersection of Holmes Street and Concannon Boulevard, according to Testa. It took firefighters from LPFD and the Alameda County Fire Department nearly two hours to get the three-alarm fire under control at the long-vacant commercial complex.

There were no injuries to the public or fire crews during the incident, according to Testa. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by LPFD and the Livermore Police Department.

Access to Holmes Street and Concannon Boulevard through the area was closed to vehicular traffic during the fire response. All roadways had reopened by 9:30 p.m., according to LPD, who handled the road closures with assistance from the California Highway Patrol.
