For a limited time, Tri-Valley residents can purchase low-cost water drums for storing backup drinking water, thanks to a partnership with the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department and Lamorinda Community Emergency Response Team.

Water drums in sizes ranging from 5 to 55 gallons are available, as well as accessories. The sale ends Thursday (Oct. 29) at noon.

“When the earthquake hits, as we know that someday it will, the most important thing to have available is drinking water,” LPFD officials said.

More than 18,000 low-cost water drums (nearly 200,000 gallons) have been distributed in the area to date.

Although officials called it “a good start,” they added “many of you still don’t have the water you need if an earthquake interrupts the local water distribution system. It could take weeks or even months to have residential service fully restored following a major quake.”

To be prepared, it is recommended to have a gallon of water per day for every person in your household, not including water for sanitation purposes. A minimum 14 day supply of water is ideal, “and, if you are able, even more.”

“Following an earthquake, local officials will work to bring water trucks into town, but that could take several days. Having your own water supply is preferable for many reasons,” officials said.

Delivery is not available, and all orders must be picked up in Moraga on Nov. 6 between 5-8 p.m.

Order online at http://supplies.lamorindacert.org. When asked to identify your CERT Program on the checkout page, be sure to indicate your affiliation with Livermore-Pleasanton CERT. This action lets LP-CERT receive a small commission from each sale.

The next water drum sale will take place in spring.
