Pleasanton school board members, district administrators and union representatives were set to meet in closed session Friday and Monday in Santa Ana to interview community members and colleagues about schools administrator David Haglund, Ed.D., the finalist for PUSD’s superintendent vacancy.

School board vice president Mark Miller, interim superintendent Micaela Ochoa, assistant superintendent of educational services Odie Douglas and administrative assistant Roseanne Pryor were to meet Friday with Santa Ana Unified School District representatives about the possible employment of Haglund, who currently works as Santa Ana’s deputy superintendent of educational services and chief academic officer.

Board president Joan Laursen; board trustees Valerie Arkin, Jamie Yee Hintzke and Steve Maher; Association of Pleasanton Teachers president Janice Clark and Classified School Employees Association vice president Nancy Bronzini will be in attendance for Monday’s site visit, according to the meeting agenda.

Each group was set to spend the day visiting Santa Ana before returning to Pleasanton, PUSD spokesman Patrick Gannon said.

“We’re trying to schedule to minimize costs, but we obviously see the importance of doing site visits,” Gannon said.

He added that he did not know whether the district is covering the costs of all those who go to Santa Ana or what travel expenses might amount to. The district would pay for transportation, food and other affiliated expenses.

If the visits are successful, contract negotiations would come next. The board would then vote on the contract and appointment June 13 with the goal of having the new leader start July 1.

Haglund, who has a 29-year career in education, would be PUSD’s fifth leader since spring 2015.

  1. I am reading interviews on the web saying that David Haglund reveals he is a high school dropout and high school was not for him. Is this the same person?

  2. Shouldn’t we be trying to hire someone younger? Judging by his picture and years of service he would appear either at or close to retirement age. It seems to me that we need longterm tenure and stability.

  3. To Concernrf and Red,
Please find his profile on LinkedIn. He has a Doctorate in Education-
He most definitely graduated from high school!

  4. David Haglund has a Youtube account including promoting an initiative signature gathering effort and I can tell that the Board and Search firm did not bother to view the videos he made because the number of views for most of the videos in his Youtube Account is mostly in the single digits. The videos include
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ng7w0s3E1Bo
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ6W9-AhKiU
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ffo_hyB7fMw
ETC (see the other ones at the bottom of his Youtube account channel).

His background is described as a combination role similar to what Gary Hicklin used to do (network and IT support) combined with someone in charge of on-line access and Community Day School continuation programs for expelled/suspended students. http://www.pe.com/2013/05/08/riverside-four-principals-to-move-over-summer/ states:
“David Haglund, the district’s director of Virtual & Continuation Programs, will be assistant superintendent for instructional support. The reorganized position is the one vacated by Jesse Stayton, who oversaw technology, network and information systems and retired in October and went to work for UC Irvine. Haglund has served as principal of Riverside Virtual School as well as the Educational Options Center, Raincross, Summit View and Opportunity alternative education programs.”

In his interview with reporters, Haglund states he is a high school dropout. Maybe the Bible studies he majored in at Pacific Christian College and his other college at California Baptist did not require a diploma perhaps?

Perhaps Jeremy Walsh can find out the truth. Also maybe Jeremy Walsh can obtain transcripts. If Haglund does have a high school diploma, why did he strongly imply to the reporters he did not when he stated he was a high school dropout?

  5. I was not able to put this URL in because I received an error message, but this URL shows a WEBCAM video of what I think was filmed from a school facility encouraging people to obtain petitions and collect signatures for the EducationForward.org statewide initiative that Haglund sponsored – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGIXjJ9VwIs

With single digit views of most videos in his Youtube account, I can tell the Board failed and never bothered to watch them.

It is clear to me that since the Youtube views of the videos are so low, that I would not be surprised if Board did not bother to use Bing or Yahoo or any other Search Engine to look anything up.

  6. Please Pleasanton…..

What does it matter if he dropped out of high school. It is what he did with his life after the fact.

He was a late bloomer and enjoyed college way more then high school. He will make a great Superintendent because he knows what it’s like to fail and rise again.

PUSD has had too many people fill this position, so maybe just maybe this guy will be able to talk to every one in our town. The overachiever, underachievers, bullies, normal people…all of us!!!

Back off and lets see what he can do for out district. I feel the people making the decision on this hiring are competent and will do what is best for all of us!!

  7. At first when I read Pleasanton Weekly headline on my phone, I thought someone had hacked into their site and posted a bogus story as some sort of joke.

Santa Ana Unified is one of the lowest ranked school districts in California according to SchoolDigger and ranks 10 slots *lower* than Oakland Unified.

Santa Ana ranks 688th out of 865 school districts in California. Oakland ranks 678th. https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CA/search.aspx

    What was the board thinking?

  8. Look on the bright side, if he fails to jump through all the hoops required by the PUSD, or say maybe he looks at someone the wrong way or says something that a person doesn’t agree with he will be terminated, paid off, and can move on to the next school district- Keeps those search firms on stand-by plenty more money to milk from this school district!
