An off-duty Alameda County Sheriff’s deputy who was killed Friday morning in a collision on Interstate 580 on the Altamont Pass has been identified as Sroeuy Khin, according sheriff’s officials.
At about 7:10 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to a call about a collision involving a passenger bus and the white Volkswagen Beetle that Khin was driving, according to the CHP.
Khin was headed eastbound on I-580, east of Grant Line Road and west of the Interstate 205 interchange in far eastern Alameda County, when his car was struck by a privately operated passenger bus, according to the CHP.
The bus driver indicated that the sun was in his eyes when he ran into the back of the Volkswagen, which had come to a stop on the roadway, said CHP spokesman Officer Derek Reed.
Investigators are still trying to determine why the car was stopped.
Khin was the sole occupant of the Volkswagen.
The bus was carrying 55 employees of Tesla, Inc. at the time and one passenger was treated for minor injuries at the scene and released, Reed said.
The official Twitter account of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office posted a photo of Khin on Friday afternoon along with a brief message.
“In Memory of Deputy Sheriff Sroeuy Khin who died today in a tragic vehicle accident,” the Twitter message says. “Our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.”
All lanes of eastbound I-580 through the area were reopened just after 1:30 p.m. following the investigation.

RIP to the officer lost in this accident. With that said, these huge buses I see all over the freeways do not do the speed limit. Perhaps this was different, but just last week, I had once of these buses behind me on 680 Northbound and I had to quickly get over to avoid it coming up on me. Our freeways are so crazy anymore 🙁
I was in this backup today for three plus hours.
I took a couple of photos of the car and the bus as they were being removed from the accident site.
KTVU channel 2 has a thirty to forty minute video of the police escort of the victim from the accident site to the Alameda County Coroner in Oakland.
Kris is right, the large buses most definitely go way over the speed limit and they love to go as fast as possible in any lane they feel like, tailgating smaller cars. There is no excuse for a bus driver to not see a white car stopped on the freeway.
I drive the altamont 3 to 4 days per week from oakdale to hayward for the past 2 years and ive seen my share of horrible accidents, i always feel that speed and just plain careless drivers are to blame, the altamont is one of the most accident prone areas in the whole bay area, i saw the car that the officer who died in was being taken away from the scene from the other side of the freeway, and my heart just sank, on my way back from hayward i ended up being in the back up for over 3 hours, i didnt mind, i just turned up my radio and dealt with it cause in the larger picture someones dad, husband and son died because someone was careless and wasnt paying attention,,,by the way cars are made with sun visors and you can easily wear sunglasses to avoid the harsh rays of the morning sun….RIP deputy khin
I live in Modesto and my husband drives over the Altamont everyday. He too was caught in the traffic for 3 hours and was just thinking about that poor family. We want to send our deepest condolences to the Khin family. Rest in peace. Thank you for your services.
Yes, all the above comments are correct regarding speeding and just plain reckless driving. I don’t know all details of this accident, so I will not comment on that. God Bless this family. My husband did say that it was so surreal watching the police officers motorcade with the coroner’s van. Very sad
Sincerely,
