The city of Pleasanton has received a top award for its success in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, saving energy, and adopting policies and programs that promote sustainability.
Mayor Jerry Thorne accepted the Beacon Award from the Institute for Local Government at the California League of Cities Conference in Sacramento.
Pleasanton earned a Beacon “Spotlight” award at the Platinum level for accomplishing 60 sustainability activities in 10 areas of the Institute’s sustainability best practice framework. The list included the implementation of an energy and water efficiency program for mobile homes, the use of weather-based irrigation controllers in city parks, the adoption of a green building ordinance and city-sponsored free e-waste and pharmaceutical drop-off events for residents.
“This award represents a systemic approach on behalf of the city and its residents towards environmental sustainability that offers an added benefit of economic sustainability,” Thorne said in accepting the award. “We are proud of our achievements and honored to have been recognized for them.”
Pleasanton was one of 50 cities and counties participating in the program, that addresses the issue of climate change.

Way to go Pleasanton! Good news and a way to combat global warming. Thanks.
Congratulations to Daniel Smith and the city of Pleasanton and for the excellent work!
Good one, member! Back to tilting at windmills and wishing man can actually impact global climate……how arrogant. Let me know when you’ve figured out how we can locally block out all of the suns rays because they are bad…really, really bad.
Actually, what’s arrogant is refusing to consider that the actions of 7 billion humans just might be impacting the environment.
Every American citizens has a responsibility for keeping Planet Earth safe for all of it’s residents: plants, animals, humans!
VIVA PLANET EARTH! VIVA!
Correction: …citizen…

Hopefully in the future Pleasanton receives an award for honesty & transparency in regards to employee contract negotiations. Instead of the PW publishing the contract savings maybe they can also include the NET cost savings, or more accurately the NET cost increases, of the employee contracts. EVERY TIME the city has claimed cost savings regarding employee contracts, when the tuth be told – the city’s claims fall flat. Grade: F. This city couldn’t be more dishonest in their representations.
I would like to see Pleasanton receive an award for transparency & honesty regarding future employee contract negotiations and contract approvals, with full disclosure.
Daniel Smith is practical, effective, and collaborative.
Would be interesting to know how much this cost, projected IRR, or some other financial analysis.
