The California Highway Patrol is investigating what led to a fire in a limousine that killed five women and injured four others Saturday night on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge.
Officers responded to a report of a fire that broke out in a white Lincoln town car limo at about 10 p.m. in the third lane of westbound state Highway 92 at the bridge’s decline, just east of Foster City, Officer Art Montiel said.
Upon noticing the fire, the driver of the limo stopped the car and got out, and was uninjured, Montiel said.
There were nine passengers in the limo, Montiel said. Five of the passengers died in the fire, and four others were transported to hospitals – two to Valley Medical Center, two to Stanford Hospital and Clinics – to be treated for smoke inhalation and burns, he said.
Montiel said all the passengers in the limo were women in their 30s who were going from Alameda to Foster City. It is unknown where in Foster City they were going, he said.
None of the deceased women has been identified, Montiel said.
The cause of the fire, and where it originated, is unknown, he said, but the limo was the only car involved in the fire.
A Sig-alert was issued at 10:28 p.m. Saturday when the CHP closed all westbound lanes, Montiel said. All lanes were closed for about 45 minutes, he said.

This is so sad. This is confusing? How did 5 young ladies die? A fire starts, they must have banged on the “glass” that separates them and the driver and let him know? not trying to put blame, but something doesn’t add up here. A fire starts, why didn’t he pull over immediately and they get out? God bless the famlies of all…
very very suspicious…very very spooky…
Electrical fire . electric doors/windows . electrical intercom = deathtrap!
Such a tragic story. Sincerest sympathies to the women involved and all of their families. Rest in peace.
Agree, something doesn’t add up and suspicious. I suppose the fire could have cut the power to the electric door locks and windows. This would prevent people from inside getting out and people outside from being able to open the door as well. If this was the case, the only other option would have been to break the windows. So why couldn’t the driver or escapees break the windows? Don’t know. I never tried to break a car window with bare hands and/or feet so I can’t say if it’s even possible. The escapees being all women probably did not help matters…their high heels would have rendered them trying to kick in the windows with their bare feet…then there’s hysteria. Ok, then how about the driver? He would have had shoes on. Shame on him if he did not try to kick in the windows. If he did try and failured, then he is off the hook. Being on the bridge also did not help matters. One would probably not be able to find a rock or some tool to break the window. So sad.
yes to last post… kicking out windows, etc. surely they were in a panick, poor girls, but just feels more could have been done here…? I guess no it doesn’t matter now…it just seems off.
I hate to be a cynic here, but could drugs be involved somehow – something along the lines of the Richard Pryor incident of long ago? How very, very tragic.
