Registering to vote is catching up to the 21st century with new software to create an online registration system making its way to county election offices statewide, but not in Alameda County.
Representatives from the Alameda County Registrar of Voters said the office would not be implementing an online system in time for the fall election.
The software to set up a link on election homepages was sent to county offices Friday and online access is expected to be available by early September, in time for the Oct. 22 registration deadline for the Nov. 6 presidential election, state Sen. Leland Yee’s (D-San Mateo/San Francisco) spokesman Adam Keigwin said.
The online registration system was put into place following passage of Yee’s bill last fall. The law now mandates that the state recognize online registration as a legal method of registering to vote.
The status quo required constituents fill out a paper form — which will still be available — but drew ire from many voters and election offices, Keigwin said.
The online system, which will be coordinated through the California Secretary of State’s office, expects to offer less paper printing and less time transferring voter information into the system for election staffers.
“It’s a lot easier to use,” Keigwin said. “When you type in your own name, you spell it correctly.”
Other human errors, many stemming from messy handwriting, will no longer be an issue, and hopefully will ameliorate registration problems on
Election Day, Keigwin said.
Online registration is also expected to save election offices money, something San Mateo County Elections Office election manager David Tom agrees with.
“It will have many, many benefits,” Tom said, including savings from lower labor costs and a more streamlined system.
“It will save us keystrokes,” Tom said. Often, election staff “have to ‘translate’ what was written.”
Tom sees an online method continuing long into the future, plus it aligns with younger voters’ lifestyle.
“Hopefully this will encourage young people to register,” he said.
Although online voter registration is now a law, individual county offices may chose not to adopt the new method.

Wait just a goll darned minute! Making it easier for people to vote and therefore expand the voting rolls? Well, I think my party will take a pass on that one! Just think about ACORN and the dozen or so cases of voting fraud over the past decade! I think if people want to vote we should make it as difficult as possible. That way only those who deserve to vote — heavy on resources, time, and liesure — will be best served.

This is unfortunately how voter suppression gets accomplished in the United States of America. Misinformed people are more likely not going to vote. If the weekly wanted to do the subject matter justice it would report on how it got snookered into reporting this blatantly false information.

Why don’t you explain what is incorrect in the article for us here! And while you are at it, can you explain to us how this new system will prevent voter registration fraud?
Don’t you just love what my friend Steve has to say? Obviously, we need to go back to a time when poll managers could charge a poll tax on those who wanted to vote or make potential voters pass a ‘citizen’s test’ if they expected to vote. Because, you see, the issues were too important back then to allow a bunch of lazy black folk to vote. And now, today, given that we have a mulatto in chief in charge of the country, it’s even more imperative that we restrict voting rights to only those who DESERVE to vote.
BTW, Acorn has not been found guilty of a single instance of voter fraud. There is not a single documented case of an Acorn member or signee entering the voting booth with intent to skew the vote. Yes, there have been cases when those charged with collecting signatures have lied about names and numbers; but this occurs in virtually every instance when parties or organizations seek petitions to advance a cause. Evangelical christians, historically, have been among the worst at signing up potential voters. But there, too, as with Acorn, there is no evidence that evangelicals have illegally skewed an election.
Predictably, you miss the point Mr. Disease. The point is that there are virtually no instances of recorded voter fraud over the past several decades. You can count the number on your fingers; then take off your shoes and count three or four more. That’s it.
I understand that you, and the other name you post under, Steve, are not very comfortable with black people. And so here, the repubs playing the race card with its voter suppression tactics, has given you a real reed to latch onto. Not that I think that the reed for one moment will at all diminish your hatred of others and self. It must be difficult for you.

You are absolutely wrong. Their are countless documented cases of voter fraud. Most memorable was the case of more people voting in Cook County, Illinois than lived in Cook County. So many more, in fact, that it was enough to put JFK in the White House, rather than Richard Nixon.
Closer to home, the voter roles have swelled in Southern California with illegals voting by the hundreds of thousands.
It is widely accepted now that Al Franken is now a Senator because of voter fraud in Minnesota.
And, let’s not forget the Black Panthers standing in front of polling places in Baltimore, ensuring that undesirables (i.e. those not voting for Obama) don’t vote. Then, naturally, Obama later says he saw nothing wrong with that and his Justice Department refuses to prosecute.

“To register to vote in Mexico a voter must provide a photo, a signature and a thumbprint. The Mexican voter-registration card includes holographic security, a magnetic code and a serial number. Before voting, voters have to show the card and have the thumbprints matched by a scanner.”
But in America, it’s “racist” to require showing a free photo ID to vote. Go figure.

Voter fraud is a fact. The problem is that it is costly and time-consuming to detect. Why not just put some controls in place up front (like Mexico and many other countries do) to minimize the opportunities for fraud.
I have 2 neighbors who moved early this year. When I voted in the primary, I checked and both of them were still on the voter roll. It would have been VERY easy for me to say I was them and vote in their place. Or if they happened to be in town visiting during the election (one of them was in town a few days later) they could have voted here and in their new state. There is NOTHING to prevent that.

As well as the Obama’s executive order on Educational Excellence for African Americans is racist.
There is nothing more racist than assumption that people of color have lower intelligence than white people and that without special supervision they cannot succeed as much as white people do.

Why do you assume black people can’t figure out how to identify themselves if they can already figure out how to get to a voting place and cast a ballot?
