Foothill High 2010 grad Danielle Alvari, aka Miss Pleasanton, will represent her city and the Bay Area this weekend in a pageant being held in Palm Desert to choose Miss California, USA 2012.

The competition will be held tomorrow through Sunday in the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert. The winner will go on to compete in Donald Trump’s Miss USA pageant in April.

“I participated in my very first pageant this past year and I have quickly developed a competitive spirit for them,” said Alvari, 19. “I have discovered that pageants are, as I had hoped, more than glamorous dresses and sparkly crowns.

“They celebrate incredibly talented young women — real girls, real role models — who are truly assets to their families, friends and their communities.”

After coming in 12th out of 160 contestants in the Miss Teenage California pageant last year, based on a 30-second speech, Alvari wanted to give it another go. She’d aged out of that contest so decided to enter Miss California, USA. She was chosen Miss Pleasanton after an application process that included a series of interviews.

“The interviews get addicting,” she said, noting that many young women continue to enter one pageant after another.

“Although I don’t know if you’d consider me an addict yet,” she added with a laugh.

The Miss California, USA contest includes interviews, and swimsuit and evening gown judging, all judged on character, poise, confidence and personality. In the swimsuit portion, the judges will look for physical fitness. Miss USA goes on to compete for Miss Universe.

“When people hear about this they think I’m this crazy pageant girl,” Alvari said, “but there’s something to be said for having this experience. I’ve done cheerleading and dance, and I’m primed to do this type of thing.”

Alvari, a sophomore at Las Positas College, believes in giving back to her community. She volunteers for the Livermore READ Project, tutoring non-native English speakers one on one. She’s an ardent supporter of the American Red Cross and has donated blood every 60 days since she turned 16.

“My platform, should I win Miss California, USA, is one that is of vital importance: obesity. It’s becoming an epidemic,” Alvari said.

She is especially concerned about overweight trends in children.

“Girls in the contest said they used to be overweight but I never had that problem,” she said, explaining that her concern stems from her mother being a dietician and her father being athletic.

“After the Miss California USA pageant, I intend to address this issue by speaking at some of the elementary schools in Pleasanton, encouraging kids to get active,” she said.

Alvari was a member of the Foothill Cheer Squad that went to national championships in 2008. She also earned varsity letters in swimming, track and field, and wrestling.

“As I am a highly competitive person by nature, without question I want to compete with the best. So here I am, competing for the title of Miss California, USA 2012,” she said.

Alvari has lived here all her life and attended Fairlands Elementary and Hart Middle School. She plans to transfer to a four-year university in September, possibly UCLA or the University of Texas, to major in communications. She’s considering a minor in political science.

“It’s an honor for me to represent my hometown of Pleasanton,” she added.

  1. Congratulations on entering and placing in a totally superficial contest. “The Miss California, USA contest includes interviews, and swimsuit and evening gown judging, all judged on character, poise, confidence and personality”.
This is perfect for Pleasantonians who judge everyone on looks, possessions and status. This girl may have some lofty ideals about preventing obesity but the reality is that parents take no responsibilty for their kids and a speech from someone who won a contest based on looks is not going to change that. At least pageants in the past had a requirement for talent. But again, this will be perfect for the P-town mentality of “it’s all about looks”.

  2. can we all get along?

it seems to me that the women that win are always waaaay skinny…this candidate seems to have too much baby fat…just sayin’…

get out of this silly contest before it’s too late…

  3. Hate the game, not the player. If you can judge a person based on an article like this, your superficiality is showing just like all the residents of Pleasanton you’re mocking.

  4. Danielle has a lot of courage and self confidence that most people don’t have. She is putting herself out there to represent Pleasanton, and I think she is a good one at that. Not only “oh really” do you not know danielle, you do not have any sort of right to judge me or any other residents in Pleasanton. And by you judging those around you, whom you are probably fake nice to in person, makes you just as superficial as you claim those around you are. And just because danielle is not a size 0, doesn’t mean she isn’t beautiful. And to say something along the lines of “danielle is too big for this competition” is just sleezy, and you should be embarrassed for making such a comment. I wish you luck Danielle, I know you’ll kick butt 🙂

  5. Danielle: You’re a lovely person inside and out and will present yourself wonderfully at the Miss California contest.

Please don’t get dragged in by the hateful people here who haven’t got the courage to use their real names when they’re posting. You’re doing something worthwhile with your life and they can’t stand that.

  6. Oh really, based on your comments you are no doubt hideous inside and out. So nice of you to judge others who obvious have more going for them than you do…….maybe you can contribute to the anti obesity movement along with moochelle Obama, another great looker.

  7. I gotta say that if this were about a platform and scholarships and talent, I’d suggest the Miss America program. The Miss USA program is more about appearance and doesn’t even have a talent portion at all. There are also no scholarships to help the contestants reach education goals. It’s simple a BEAUTY pageant in every sense of the word. I hope Danielle will pursue the Miss America avenue so she can be awarded with scholarships and judged on character, truly on platform, intelligence and even based on working hard to have talent. I grew up being in pageants with two Miss California titles under my belt by age 14. I received scholarship money and even savings bonds that I still have even today. I would allow my own teenage daughters to compete if they had an interest, but NOT in the Trump program and instead in those more like the Miss America program.

I do wish Danielle all the best and I hope she will make lifelong friends with some wonderful you ladies just as I did. These friendships mean so much more than the friend I won. I wish this for her too.

Good luck Danielle. Do us proud.

  8. Danielle, I hope you have fun at the competition, meet some new friends, and maybe even win! Any competitions such as these help young people gain self confidence and poise to speak to groups of people. Take those skills and use them in your education and career. You’re smart enough not to listen to the negative comments some people who sit on the side lines are making. Best of luck.

  9. Congratulations!

I don’t know you but I certainly admire your goal oriented character.

I wish you all the best as you pursue your dreams and goals.

  10. We all wish you the very best and we are proud to know you! You are a wonderful representative for the city of Pleasanton!

  11. To each his own, I wish all the ladies good luck in there, but I wish the paper would acknowledge there is another girl headed down there by the name of Dalia Shafi…

  12. “Oh really” keep your vinegar comments to yourself & stop passing judgement on our Danielle & Dalia who are doing an incredible job of doing their best! Jealous? My guess is that you’re fairly new to Pleasanton & intimidated by the success, encouragement & self confidence of its residents. Get a life & look in the mirror before you talk so disrespectfully of your fellow Pleasantonians. Love it or leave it, there’s no room here for anything but support for each other. Sounds like you don’t belong, is this why you’re so bitter??? Keep being the best you can be Dalia & Danielle & life long success & optimism will be yours! You didn’t get where you are now by listening to the ignorance of pessimist like “oh really”!
