Cigarette ashes flicked into tan bark in the front yard landscaping most likely caused a house fire in Pleasanton, which killed a family dog, firefighters said Thursday.

A passersby called the fire department about 4:20 p.m. after seeing flames and smoke outside a single-family home in the 2800 block of Curry Street, said Battalion Chief Joe Testa, in northeast Pleasanton near the end of Stoneridge Drive.

Two parents and two grown children were home at the time of the fire but were not aware of it until they heard the sirens as firefighters arrived. The flames were quickly extinguished but the family dog, a beagle, was killed in the fire.

The fire caused about $25,000 in damage to the home, including discoloration of the walls and cracked windows, according to Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department reports

Investigations showed cigarette ashes had been dropped into tan bark in front of the home and were responsible for the fire, according to reports.

  1. No, justsayin’. And I don’t think the article infers it was the owners. Of course it very possible it was someone else walking around the neighborhood.

  2. Just a dog? That poor dog died a tragic death. That dog must have felt the same pain and was probably just as scared as a human would be if they were in that position. If it was the owners fault, how sad their dog had to perish because they couldn’t dispose if their cigarette properly.

    Rip in dog heaven

  3. It is just a dog and sad but not a human being so not even close to the same level. You people need to realize that animals and human beings are not even close to being in the same category.

  4. You try telling the blind person who relies on a seeing eye dog or the little girl who relies on the dog to help her get around that they are ‘just a dog’ and let us know how that works. A dog still has feelings and a personality and should be treated with a level of respect. An animal gone is still a life lost.

In regards to the comment “You people need to realize that animals and human beings are not even close to being in the same category.” – Animals are so different that is why we do our testing on animals!?
