This mother duck and her 13 ducklings were determined to go on a walk to Kottinger Park last Sunday, Mother’s Day, crossing five streets before getting to their destination with the help of Lisa Lorentz, Ron and Joey Sutton and Vivian Alder. Lorentz first spotted the ducks on Bernal Avenue after returning from a Mother’s Day breakfast with her family. Knowing the duck family was going to be crossing several busy intersections, she took her own family home and ran back to the ducks, following them on their journey and helping them cross streets until they arrived at their final destination. The journey wasn’t easy; the family took a break for shade along the way and at one point the ducklings were so tired that after crossing the road, they couldn’t hop up on the curb. The human-helpers made a little ramp and it helped get them on their way. At last, the mother duck and her ducklings made it the water and tall grass at Kottinger Park, and the Suttons, Lorentz and Alder said goodbye and wished the mother duck a Happy Mother’s Day.
