A vegetation fire that burned Sunday evening in an area of Castro Valley began as a vehicle fire on Interstate 580, according to the Alameda County Fire Department.
The fire was first reported at 5:45 p.m. on the westbound side of the freeway near Eden Canyon Road. A vehicle caught fire on I-580 and the blaze spread to nearby vegetation. The driver and sole occupant of the car was able to exit the vehicle and was not injured, according to the California Highway Patrol. Two lanes of I-580 were still closed at 10 p.m., with an unknown time of opening, CHP said.
The fire burned mostly grass but had the potential to reach structures and grow to 100 acres, Alameda Fire said. But by 6:40 p.m. the fire was at 15 acres with no structures harmed and no people hurt.
Cal Fire, which assisted with the blaze along with the East Bay Regional Park District, said at 7:45 p.m. that the fire was held to 18.37 acres.
