Tri-Valley residents will get the chance to check out Valley Humane Society’s refurbished Pet Adoption Center in Pleasanton – and meet some of the dogs and cats available there now – at an open house reception and ribbon cutting this Friday.

The 14-year-old building at 3670 Nevada St. recently received fresh coats of paint and more “to create an even more welcoming space that fosters connections between people and animals”, according to Valley Humane officials.

“People often feel nervous about visiting animal shelters, but Valley Humane’s adoption center is filled with love, compassion and optimism,” they said in a press release.

The refresh also included new signage dedicating the facility for Sandy St. Dennis, who volunteered her veterinary skills to the nonprofit for 20 years.

“Dr. St. Dennis was a game changer for Valley Humane,” said Melanie Sadek, Valley Humane’s president and CEO. “Her unwavering support and dedication elevated our ability to serve both animals and the community. Very few animal welfare organizations are fortunate enough to have access to such exceptional volunteer veterinary care — we wouldn’t be where we are today without her.”

The open house runs from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday (May 30), including a short program at 6 p.m. and the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6:15 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

One weekend later, the Valley Humane adoption center is joining more than 150 animal shelters statewide to waive adoption fees on June 7 as part of the second annual California Adopt-a-Pet Day.

The nonprofit said its shelter has “a full house of loving pets just waiting to go home”.

“Adopting a pet has many benefits,” officials said. “Animals have already been spayed or neutered, microchipped, and given age-appropriate vaccines. Valley Humane’s adoption team helps match prospective families and individuals with animals who suit their lifestyle, and can provide advice on care and how best to integrate a new pet into the household.”

The Valley Humane adoption center will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Saturday (June 7) for the fee-waiver event. Adopt-a-Pet Day, which seeks to find new families for 5,000 adoptable animals statewide, is organized by the California Animal Welfare Association, the San Francisco SPCA, and the ASPCA.
