The Pleasanton Unified School District Board of Trustees will be holding a special closed board meeting Wednesday where the trustees are set to discuss the permanent superintendent position.
According to Board President Justin Brown, the district had a “very positive response” to the application period for the new district leader position, which officially closed on April 30.
“The board will be reviewing the top applicants as recommended by the search consultant starting this Wednesday and we plan to start our interviews next week,” Board President Justin Brown said in a statement to the Weekly.
The district has been working with a search firm over the past few months to find candidates to replace former superintendent David Haglund, who departed from PUSD at the end of the 2024 school year. Interim Superintendent Maurice Ghysels has been filling the seat until the district finds a permanent replacement.
“There will be a minimum of two rounds of interviews and the board expects to review a potential contract of whomever is the final candidate at a regularly scheduled meeting in June,” Brown said.
At the State of the District event in late February, Brown said the goal was to have someone in place by July 1.
According to executive assistant to the superintendent Lanita Villaseñor, any additional information regarding the specifics of Wednesday’s discussion are limited due to the nature of the closed session meeting.
“Any future information regarding the superintendent position will be shared at the board’s direction in the near future,” she said.
The board’s open session portion of the meeting is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday (May 14). Read the full agenda here.

Wondering why this process is taking so long. Hagland announced his retirement a year ago. Since then, several Bay Area districts have posted their Superintendent vacancies and have already hired. As usual, something sounds very fishy with this process.
