As a way to celebrate educational excellence, the Dublin Unified School District unveiled its roster of distinguished educators for the 2023-24 academic year.
Among them, one outstanding teacher stood out, earning the coveted title of District Teacher of the Year: Lauren Apodaca of Murray Elementary School.
In the announcement, DUSD superintendent Chris Funk expressed gratitude for the collective efforts of educators within the district.
“In Dublin, we’re lucky to have such a strong team of educators, making it especially challenging to spotlight individual achievements,” said Funk. “All our teachers play a crucial role in our students’ success and we’re thankful for their hard work.”
“While every teacher deserves recognition, it’s a special honor to recognize our Site Teachers of the Year, nominated for this distinction by their peers, reflecting the profound respect and admiration they have earned,” continued Funk.
DUSD oversees the education of over 12,000 students across more than a dozen school sites. Each year select educators are nominated by their peers for their dedication and commitment to student success. This year’s cohort of school site teachers represents a diverse group of educators across all grade levels.
The included Adrienne Conrad (Amador Elementary), Jennifer Crothers (Dougherty Elementary), TJ Heintz (Dublin Elementary), Lisa Kleinr (Frederiksen Elementary), Trisha Hahan (Green Elementary), Kristen Moore (Kolb Elementary), Krystal Shaw (Cottonwood Creek K-8), Gabriel Manalac (Fallon Middle School), Denise Bunger (Wells Middle School), Katina Lewis (Dublin High), Jason Rockwell (Emerald High), and Mackenzie Hunt (Valley High & York Alternative Learning Center).
Apodaca, Murray Elementary’s representative, was named districtwide Teacher of the Year.
Murray Elementary principal Bethannee Witczak shared praise for Apodaca’s contributions in the announcement, highlighting her leadership and dedication to student welfare.
“Lauren is an invaluable educator who has made a significant impact on the students at Murray Elementary,” she said. “Her unwavering dedication to her students and her commitment to going above and beyond in supporting their needs is truly commendable.”
A special day class (SDC) teacher, Apodaca’s work addressed the needs of students with disabilities or those requiring small-group instructional settings.
“As a lead teacher in the special education program at Murray, Lauren demonstrates exceptional leadership by providing support to the entire team to ensure that all students with IEPs receive the best possible care and education,” Witczak continued. “Her impact extends beyond the classroom, as evidenced by the many older students who still come by to say hello and receive a hug from her.”
Witczak noted Apodaca’s ability to forge meaningful connections with students and families, extending far beyond the classroom.
“She is masterful at building and maintaining positive relationships with parents, empowering them to support their children’s learning at home. Lauren’s work is truly invaluable, and she is an asset to our school community,” said Witczak.
The superintendent added, “to be celebrated among such esteemed colleagues is a testament to their exceptional impact and commitment. Congratulations to each of our Site Teachers of the Year. Your dedication makes a real difference in our community and in the lives of our students.”
