In a pivotal turn of events the Dublin Teachers Association and the Dublin Unified School District reached a tentative agreement last week, effectively averting a looming strike that had sent ripples of concern through the local community.

The agreement has since been ratified by the teachers union as of March 21.

DUSD superintendent Chris Funk expressed satisfaction with the outcome on both sides. Funk emphasized their shared commitment to providing the best possible education for students in Dublin.

“We are pleased to announce that the Dublin Teachers Association has ratified the recent tentative agreement, moving us closer to resolving our contract negotiations,” said Funk. “The next and final step will be to bring the contract to the board for final approval on March 26, 2024.”

The negotiations between the teachers union and the school district had been ongoing for months, with tensions mounting as the deadline for a potential strike drew nearer. Key issues on the table included salary adjustments, educator resources, and healthcare benefits.

One of the primary concerns for teachers was the need for fair and equitable compensation that reflects the rising costs of living in the region.

The union advocated for a salary increase that would not only keep pace with inflation but also provide teachers with a living wage that acknowledges the valuable service they provide to the community.

After several months of negotiations, which involved mediation from impartial parties, a breakthrough finally occurred. DUSD and DTA managed to agree on a 6% salary increase.

Initially, DTA members asked for a 9% salary increase for all its members as a way to “ensure that DUSD students have the best educators.” The district countered this with a 2% salary increase, causing months of negotiation deadlock.

“We know this has been a long and arduous process for everyone involved, and we are pleased that this work is nearing completion,” said Funk. “All parties involved are relieved that there will be no disruptions to our students’ education.”

According to DUSD’s statement, the agreement includes “a total 6.0% salary increase paid as follows: 4.5% on schedule retroactive to July 1, 2023 and 1.5% effective May 1, 2024, which includes an additional half percent (0.5%) to reflect the five additional collaboration meetings (total of 26).”

The district has also committed to allowing additional preparation time for elementary school teachers.

“Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, the number of preparation periods provided to elementary grades 1-5 will increase from ninety (90) to one hundred eight (108) sessions annually,” DUSD representatives said.

Additionally, DUSD will offer transferable years of experience for new and existing employees starting next school year.

Beginning with the 2024-2025 school year, the District will also provide new and existing employees, with up to eight (8) of their years of experience for prior full-time TK-12 teaching experience,” representatives stated.

The superintendent added, “we are grateful for the hard work and dedication of our teachers and staff, and we look forward to continuing to work together to support our students and strengthen our community.”

The DUSD board is set to review and vote on the agreement during Tuesday’s regular meeting. The agenda is available here.
