A Dublin man was shot to death in the parking lot of a local sports park Saturday afternoon and his elderly parents-in-law have been booked in jail on suspicion of committing the homicide, city police said in a case update Sunday.
Dublin Police Services confirmed the identity of the decedent as 40-year-old Jonathan McKinsey. The New York Times later confirmed to the Pleasanton Weekly that McKinsey worked remotely for its organization as head of engineering, games player experience.
The department also announced that the man’s father-in-law Shouyong Zhang, 77, and mother-in-law Shili Chen, 77 – both also Dublin residents – were in custody at the Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder. A motive has not been revealed publicly by police.
“DPS thanks the witnesses and community members who assisted responding officers; their cooperation was critical to the swift arrest of the suspects,” Capt. Miguel Campos said in a follow-up press release around 2 p.m. Sunday.
Campos revealed more details about what transpired at Dublin Sports Grounds than what was included in a brief public statement hours after the shooting Saturday – but questions still remain.
According to the case update, a Dublin police sergeant was driving near the sports park at 6700 Dublin Blvd. at 3:08 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 26) when he saw a man lying on the ground in the middle of the parking lot, so the sergeant stopped to investigate. At about that same time, DPS dispatch began receiving multiple calls to 911 about a shooting at the park.
Saturday was listed as a busy morning and afternoon for youth athletics at the expansive sports complex adjacent to Interstate 580, not far from the Interstate 680 interchange, with soccer and flag football among the sports on the city’s calendar during the day. The park is about two blocks from the city’s police station.
DPS personnel, paramedics and other first-responders descended upon Dublin Sports Grounds. The critically injured man – later identified as McKinsey – was pronounced dead at the scene after having sustained multiple gunshot wounds, according to Campos.
“With help from witnesses, within minutes, DPS officers located and detained two suspects who had remained nearby,” the captain said.
Chen and Zhang were booked into Santa Rita Jail on Sunday morning, 5:06 a.m. and 7:49 a.m., respectively, according to Alameda County’s online inmate locator. Police listed charges of murder, conspiracy, willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence and child abuse against both arrestees.
It is unclear whether the couple were formally charged by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office over the weekend. The inmate locator says they are scheduled to appear in court for arraignment at the courthouse in Dublin at 9 a.m. Wednesday (Sept. 30).
“This investigation is active and ongoing. DPS detectives are continuing to examine evidence to determine the circumstances that led to this homicide,” Campos said.
