Wildfire mitigation
Pleasanton is taking proactive measures to reduce the risk of wildfires in and around the Augustin Bernal Park by removing any hazardous vegetation that could possibly become fuel for future fires.
According to the city, this mitigation work is being funded by a $1 million grant from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
“Work has begun and will continue throughout the summer months to create and maintain a reduced fuel zone within the park and surrounding wildland-urban interface,” the city stated in a July e-newsletter. “These efforts will help firefighters more effectively suppress wildfires, reduce fire intensity, and slow the spread of flames into nearby neighborhoods.”
This mitigation work may cause periodic trail closures. Visitors will be notified through notices at park trailheads.
Critical O+ shortage
The Stanford Blood Center is asking members of the public to donate blood as the center faces critically low blood inventory, according to a spokesperson.
The shortage comes as regular donors are currently traveling, school is out and seasonal colds are going around. The Fourth of July weekend also had an impact as patients in nearby hospitals needed blood to receive emergency treatment.
“We only have a one-day supply of O+ blood on hand for our partner hospitals,” Jeff Schmidt, a public relations and communications manager with the center, told the Weekly. “So, we need every eligible donor to come in as quickly as possible.”
Those who donate from now until July 31 will receive a collectible tie-dye shirt. For more information, visit stanfordbloodcenter.org.
New PNR president
The Pleasanton North Rotary Club and Foundation named its new board of directors president last month.
Deb Covert-Williams, a Rotarian since 2017, replaces Pleasanton chiropractor Ryan Spuller, who helped raise over $115,000 during his time as president. According to the organization, $90,000 in grants were also awarded to nonprofits across the Tri-Valley during his tenure.
Covert-Williams comes from a background in technology sales which she plans on using to recruit new members and “build on its reputation for providing hands-on volunteer help and financial assistance to numerous community service organizations in the Tri-Valley”.
“I believe that helping others brings joy, not only to those receiving support, but also to those giving it,” she said in a press release.
Dublin Expo returns
The Dublin Expo: Sip, Savor & Support Local Business event is returning to the Tri-Valley next month to celebrate the best food, wine, beer and businesses that the city of Dublin has to offer.
According to the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, which is hosting the event, the expo “brings people together to taste, connect, and discover the businesses that make Dublin thrive — all in a fun, welcoming atmosphere”.
The event is scheduled to take place Aug. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Dublin, located at 6680 Regional St.
Residents who want to attend and businesses looking to participate in the expo can find more information at www.dublinchamberofcommerce.org. The event will be free for chamber members — non-members and the general public must pay $10 to enter.
