A new public art installation hit the ground this summer — literally — at Sycamore Grove Park in Livermore.
Featuring seven mosaic stepping stones, the project depicts the movement of water on its way from rainfall to the San Francisco Bay.
The imagery is intended to inspire public interest in protecting the local watershed, according to a statement from the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District announcing the installation at its park.
Local artists Thomasin Dewhurst and Anne Giancola led the project with student artists’ participation.
“We’re excited to have this artwork become part of Sycamore Grove Park,” LARPD recreation manager Joseph Benjamin said in a statement. “The installation fits naturally with the park and gives visitors another way to connect with and learn about the environment around them.”
Composed of five 3-foot-diameter stones and two 18-inch stones, the pieces are made of reinforced concrete with mosaic glass and cement paint.
They are accessible from the park’s Wetmore Road entrance and can be found near the native garden.
LARPD completed the installation in July, following a presentation of the artwork to the LARPD Board of Directors in April.
The project was possible thanks to grant funding from the Alameda County Clean Water Program, according to park district officials.
