Livermore-based SPARC Theater has scheduled its production of Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie” – which debuted in the nonprofit company’s hometown this spring – for a late-summer run in Hayward.
Three performances, featuring the same director and cast as May, are now on the calendar for Sept. 18-20 at the Douglas Morrisson Theatre in collaboration with the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District.
“There’s something profoundly powerful about sharing space with this story,” director Gary Armagnac said in a recent press release.
“The play invites audiences to lean in — to listen closely, to recognize themselves in these characters, and to experience the emotional honesty that has made ‘The Glass Menagerie’ one of America’s enduring theatrical masterpieces,” he added.
The SPARC production stars Emilie Talbot as matriarch Amanda Wingfield, Eliot Hall as Tom Wingfield, Isadora Zucker as Laura Wingfield and James Crutcher as Jim, the gentleman caller.
“Set in 1930s St. Louis, ‘The Glass Menagerie’ follows aspiring poet Tom Wingfield as he recalls his family’s fragile world — his overbearing mother, Amanda; his painfully shy sister, Laura; and the quiet heartbreak that defines their lives. Through memory and longing, Tennessee Williams explores timeless themes of hope, regret, responsibility, and the longing for a different life,” SPARC reps said.
The theater company debuted “The Glass Menagerie” with a weekend run May 1-3 at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore – in the venue’s intimate Stage Door Lounge setup.
The new partnership with the Hayward park district reflects SPARC’s “commitment to extending the life of exceptional productions and making professional theater accessible to audiences throughout the East Bay”, according to SPARC.
