Observing Memorial Day
This Memorial Day, Livermore Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Post 7265 will be hosting a remembrance ceremony at Stockmen’s Park in Livermore to honor U.S. service members.
The event will begin just before 11 a.m. with a bagpipe performance, followed by a presentation of the nation’s colors by the Scouting America Troop 924 and a live performance of the national anthem, according to organizers.
The event will also feature several organizations who will place wreaths “honor of our fallen comrades”; guest speakers, including Livermore Mayor John Marchand; and a special tribute for the U.S. turning 250 years old. The event will conclude with further tributes dedicated to service members who have died.
Prior to Monday’s event, Livermore’s Chapter of the Young Men’s Service League will be holding an event this Saturday, May 23, at 9 a.m. where mother and son teams will be planting American flags on the final resting places of veterans at Memory Garden Cemetery and St. Michael’s Cemetery.
In Pleasanton, the Pleasanton Community Concert Band is set to perform at the Senior Center for its Memorial Day observance from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday (May 25).
Cone with a Cop

The Pleasanton Police Department is once again hosting its annual “Cone with a Cop” event next Wednesday (May 27) from 2-4 p.m. at Pleasanton’s Meadowlark Dairy.
The event, according to PPD, is usually well-attended by residents — last year, the department served over 2,000 cones.
According to the department, the family-friendly event offers residents the opportunity to directly speak with members of the police department and the chance to learn about safety and security measures, all while enjoying free ice cream.
Each event attendee will be limited to one free cone during the event. Attendees are encouraged to walk or bike to the dairy in order to avoid traffic.
The Longest Table
Residents and community members are gearing up for The Longest Table picnic, an event that aims to take over downtown Pleasanton on June 6.
“We’re taking over Main Street with a Longest Table event in downtown Pleasanton,” according to the event’s description on Eventbrite. “We will provide the tables and chairs. You bring everything needed for a picnic: good food, good friends, and good fun.
Pleasanton Connects, a local community-building initiative, is working with Longest Table, a nonprofit organization that facilitates these types of large-scale picnics across the country, to put the event together.
While the event is at full capacity as of time of publication, organizers said if there are any cancellations they will send out notices the week before the event.
Highway 84 closures

This week, Caltrans workers began conducting overnight closures of State Route 84 in Sunol in order to begin construction of the Arroyo de la Laguna Bridge, a project the transportation agency said will replace the current bridge with a safer, more dependable one.
The Arroyo de la Laguna bridge, which was built in 1939, will be replaced with a new one that offers a wider and safer roadway, and accessible sidewalks that will overall help improve safety and travel throughout the Niles Canyon and Sunol, the agency stated.
According to the agency, the overnight closures began on Monday, May 18 and will continue to take place Monday through Friday for approximately the next four weeks. The closures, which are from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., span from Main Street to Bond Street in Sunol.
All of the work will be dependent on the weather conditions.
“For the safety of crews and motorists, Caltrans will implement full closures in this area while work is underway,” Caltrans stated in a press release. “Daytime construction will follow and continue through October. Additional traffic advisories will be sent as the project progresses.”

Livermore garage mural
The city of Livermore is currently seeking proposals from artists to paint a mural on the eastern side of the city’s new L Street Garage, located in downtown Livermore.
According to the city, the project must also honor the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s historic fusion ignition achievement in 2022.
“Entry is open to professional artists who have completed large-scale, outdoor murals,” according to the city. “The selected artist will design and install the mural. All artworks must be original designs and suitable for viewing by all ages.”
The deadline for artists to submit their artwork proposals is June 15 at 10:59 p.m. To apply, click here.
Indian classical dance benefit concert
KRIPA, an Indian classical dance school based in the Tri-Valley, is hosting a benefit concert this Sunday at the Livermore High School Theater to raise money for senior citizen programs.
According to the event description, Kalamandalam Supriya Sudhakar, founder and artistic director of KRIPA, has curated a night of Indian classical dance, which is set to start at 4:30 p.m.
“This event is a ‘confluence’ of two Indian classical dance traditions: the lyrical, swaying grace of Mohiniyattam and the dynamic, geometric precision of Bharathanatyam,” the event description states. “These two distinct styles will be woven together to interpret the spiritual and musical depth of Sri Muthuswāmī Dīkṣithar’s kritis.”
According to the event, 100% of the net proceeds for the event will be donated to the Dublin Senior Center Foundation to support local senior programs.
