The Livermore police investigation into the morning commute collision that killed two drivers last month on Highway 84 is ongoing, but the department confirmed more specifics this week about what transpired.

The circumstances of the April 21 crash were initially unclear that day, but the traffic investigators have determined that the Honda Accord was traveling northbound and crossed into the southbound lane, striking an approaching Ram pickup truck head-on. The Livermore Police Department is still waiting on key details from the coroner’s report, such as toxicology testing results, spokesperson Azenith Smith told Livermore Vine.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau identified the decedents as 49-year-old Tracy resident Jorge Gutierrez and 23-year-old Manteca man Isaiah Daniel Paiva.

Paiva, a Delta Charter School graduate who worked on the Tesla production line, was remembered from his “vibrant spirit and infectious laughter” in an obituary published by his family online.

“Isaiah had a flair for style, always looking sharp and smelling wonderful with the latest colognes,” his family wrote. “A true lover of life, his goofy personality brought joy to those around him. He had a unique ability to make others laugh and always found the fun in every situation.”

Gutierrez was a loving father, husband and son, according to a GoFundMe page created in his honor and to generate support for the family in the aftermath of his death. The fundraiser’s organizer said Gutierrez was on his way to work that fateful morning.

The crash unfolded at around 5:55 a.m. April 21 on Isabel Avenue/Highway 84 in Livermore, just north of the intersection of Kalthoff Common/Ruby Hill Drive.

According to police, Paiva was driving the Accord northbound on the highway when, for unknown reasons, the sedan veered into the opposite lane and struck Gutierrez’s southbound pickup. Both drivers died at the scene. They were the only occupants of their respective vehicles.

The cause of the crash remains undetermined and under investigation.
