State Assemblyman Albert Torrico, D-Newark, urged voters in the Pleasanton portion of his 20th District to cast their ballots for high school teacher Cheryl Cook-Kallio in the Nov. 7 City Council election. Torrico spoke at a fundraiser for Cook-Kallio last Tuesday at the Ruby Hill Community Center.

He said Cook-Kallio “has the experience and credentials in community work and education that are essential in local government” and that make her “an excellent choice for the Pleasanton council.”

Torrico, who was elected to the Assembly in 2004, is seeking re-election to the post. His district serves Fremont, Newark, Union City, Milpitas, and parts of San Jose, Hayward, Castro Valley and Pleasanton.

Presbyterian church plans public ‘coffee’ for candidates

A candidates’ coffee will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. next Thursday at the Pleasanton Presbyterian Church at 4300 Mirador Drive, with the public invited to join in discussions with the candidates for municipal office.

Church spokesman Howard Neely said candidates will be asked to “reflect on who they are and what they feel are the needs of Pleasanton.” Then the group will have an opportunity to sit at tables to discuss the issues with each of the candidates.

Invited to the coffee are the two candidates for mayor: Mayor Jennifer Hosterman and Councilman Steve Brozosky; and the four running for council: Councilman Jerry Thorne, Planning Commission Chairman Brian Arkin, high school teacher Cheryl Cook-Kallio and local businessman Dan Faustina.

Hosterman holds campaign barbecue tonight

Mayor Jennifer Hosterman, who is seeking re-election on Nov. 7, will hold a campaign fundraiser and barbecue starting at 5:30 p.m. today at the Fairgrounds’ Ivy Glen picnic area. A campaign contribution of $25 is suggested, with the first 300 guaranteed food “and the rest guaranteed fun,” Hosterman said.

Hosterman is running against Councilman Steve Brozosky for the mayor’s post.

Buck wins Pleasanton school board members’ endorsement

All five Pleasanton school board members this week endorsed Republican Jill Buck’s bid for the 15th District State Assembly seat that is being given up by Assemblyman Johan Klehs, a Democrat, because of term limits.

School trustees Steve Pulido, Pat Kernan, Juanita Haugen, Kris Weaver and Jim Ott said they have worked with Buck for many years, and have seen her education advocacy in action.

“I truly believe that we need people like Jill in Sacramento,” said school board President Pulido, who also said that he is a registered Democrat. “It is time for change and ethics in government. Jill has my total support and endorsement.”

Longtime board member Juanita Haugen, who is also former president of the California School Boards Association, added: “Jill is intelligent, capable, will advocate for her constituents and will build much needed consensus in the Assembly.î

Buck will be holding a fundraising event on Oct. 4 in Oakland, joined by former State Treasurer Matt Fong and

other local and state political leaders.

She is running against Democrat Mary Hayashi, a Castro Valley resident who works in the public health sector.

Candidates’ forum set for Oct. 10

The Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a public forum and luncheon for candidates for mayor and the City Council Tuesday, Oct. 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Fairgrounds’ Palm Pavilion. The candidates for mayor are the current Mayor Jennifer Hosterman, who is seeking re-election, and Councilman Steve Brozosky.
