A looming strike by BART employees has the city of Pleasanton thinking about how it can be prepared for that scenario to play out.
City Traffic Engineer Mike Tassano said the traffic engineering department and Pleasanton Police Department are “working in tandem with BART and the Livermore Amador Valley Transit Authority (LAVTA), which operates Wheels buses, on a contingency plan.
While labor negotiations continue, midnight tonight is the end of the contract extension for BART workers. If no deal is reached at midnight, the two sides could either negotiate in good faith or seek a 60-day cooling off period that bars strikes and lockouts.
Temporary bus stops for Wheels have been named in the event a strike occurs, Tassano said. He added the police department’s motors/traffic division will manage traffic flow and any impacts that result from the temporary bus stops.

The real story here is why we continue to allow strikes for essential services. Fire ’em. There are plenty of hard working Americans ready to fill their positions AND sign a no-strike waiver.
If there is a strike, we should expect additional cut-through traffic, heavier than usual congestion on the 580 and 680 freeways, increased air pollution and more gas tax revenues.
Maybe Jerry Brown can sue them for their contribution to global warming by causing all that traffic congestion.
If in fact… Bart employees strike,will Mike and his engineers respond by communicating to our Community in detail the best course of action for commuters. The above article appears to be a “what if there is a strike” situation. I hope that Mike makes sure that time lines, frequency of buses(is it the same?) are communicated to the public effectively and timely.
Pete, hate to break it to you, but that’s your job. I don’t want my tax dollars used to babysit people that can’t figure out how to navigate our town. 🙂
Stacey, what a novel idea. Just think, striking BART employees that live in Pleasanton would get sued twice by Mr. Moonbeam. 😉
P-Towner, tax dollars are responsibly used when adequate detail is supplied to streamline services to assist others to save time so that their time is used to patronize our businesses,visit friends,family etc.Anyhow, thanks for breaking me the news. 🙂
Im not sure what a contingency plan means and how Wheels plays into the equation. If BART is on strike I assume the effect means the people who work in Pleasanton and do not live in Pleasanton will have to drive or ride a bus to Pleasanton. So we in Pleasanton use city dollars to support out of towners, so to speak. The other side of the argument is how people who live in Pleasanton and work elsewhere will get to work. As you know, BART workers are grossly overpaid, perhaps the unemployed in Pleasanton can take their jobs if they do strike.
