A Tracy man died on Interstate 580 outside Livermore after his motorcycle was struck by a wayward SUV and propelled directly into the path of a semi-truck on Wednesday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP-Dublin Officer Tyler Hahn said investigators are working to locate both surviving drivers as neither stayed at the scene. The agency also put out a video on social media Thursday morning calling for information on the whereabouts of the hit-and-run motorists.
The situation unfolded just before 7:45 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 6) on eastbound I-580 west of Grant Line Road near the Stone Cut railroad crossing in unincorporated Alameda County in greater Livermore, according to Hahn. Callers to 911 reported a motorcycle rider down on the freeway lanes with major injuries after a collision with a semi-truck.
The initial investigation revealed that a gold SUV, possibly an older-model Lexus, was weaving erratically through traffic ultimately side-swiped the motorcyclist who was splitting the Nos. 1 and 2 lanes, according to Hahn.
The 1995 Harley Davidson motorcycle and its rider were knocked underneath the semi-truck driving in the No. 3 lane, Hahn said. The motorcyclist, a 60-year-old man from Tracy whose name has not been released yet, was pronounced dead that night.
“The semi-truck and the gold SUV both briefly stopped on the shoulder before fleeing the scene,” Hahn said. “The semi-truck was described to be hauling a white shipping container on a flat bed. The container was white with red lettering.”
CHP investigators are looking for witnesses to help provide more information about the crash and the hit-and-run vehicles that drove away, according to Hahn. People can report details to the CHP-Dublin office at 925-828-0466.
Correction: A prior version of this story misstated the location of death. The motorcyclist died at a hospital in San Joaquin County after the collision. Embarcadero Media Foundation’s East Bay Division regrets the error.
