It was a solid first week for the East Bay Athletic League girls’ volleyball teams in the first week of the North Coast Section Open and Division I tournaments.

It’s the first ever year for NCS to have an Open Division, with Foothill and Carondelet representing the league.

Foothill was seeded fourth and played host to No. 5 Redwood in the first round.

Redwood got out quick, taking set one 25-22 before the Falcons took control, winning the next three 25-17, 28-26, and 25-19 to advance to the semifinals.

Foothill will travel to top-seeded Branson for a semifinal match on Wednesday. In their first match of the season, the Falcons fell 3-0 to Branson.

Carondelet was seeded No. 6 and had to travel to Union City to face No. 3 James Logan. The Colts got the best of the Cougars, winning 3-0 and will now face No. 2 seed Marin Catholic on Wednesday as well.

Carondelet’s season did not come to an end as the Cougars will play at Redwood on Wednesday with a possible spot in the CIF NorCal playoffs on the line.

In D-I action, San Ramon Valley was seeded No. 1 and had a first-round bye. In the second round the Wolves hosted No. 9 Castro Valley — a winner over Las Lomas (No. 8) in the first round. The Wolves made the most of the night, winning 3-1 to take a spot in the Wednesday semifinals.

Amador Valley (No. 5) dispatched Petaluma 3-0 in the first round, but then fell at Campolindo (No. 4), falling a game short of getting another shot at SRV.

San Ramon Valley will host Campo on Wednesday in one semifinal.

In the other half of the bracket, Monte Vista (No. 7) beat Northgate (No. 10) 3-0 in the first round, then took out Windsor (No. 2) in the second, earning a spot in the semifinals. They will play at Tamalpais (No. 3) in the other semifinal.

EBAL football

When teams meet their rival school, you can throw records out the window as the intensity is peaked for the game.

When that game has the added attraction of winning your division and hanging a banner in the gym, the level of excitement is insane!

Such is the case this week when (3-0 in Valley play) Livermore will travel crosstown to face 3-0 Granada, the winner claiming an EBAL Valley title.

Get there early and get ready for the Battle of Livermore to fill the Mats’ house.

In the Mountain play, Amador Valley (6-3, 1-1) got a signature win for the school and coach Danny Jones when they beat Monte Vista 32-28.

The Dons finished with a season high 405 yards of offense in the win.

This week the Dons face another big game when they host California (7-2, 1-1) in a showdown for outright possession of second place in the Mountain Division.

The Grizzlies should be ornery since they are coming off a 48-10 loss to De La Salle.

EBAL girls’ tennis

Last year Dublin won the first EBAL title in school history, setting the bar fairly high for this season.

No problem.

After dispatching Monte Vista in the regular season finale, the Gaels finished 13-0 and alone on top of the EBAL.

The following, with the permission of the school, is a roundup from the Dublin athletics website.

“The Gaels came into their final regular season match 12-0 and had already wrapped up the Valley division championship. Monte Vista also came in with a mark of 12-0 and won the Mountain division crown.

Powered by the strength of a sweep with its singles’ lineup, the Gaels defeated the Mustangs 6-3 to cap an unprecedented regular season.

All six players (Maya Peav, Mady Peav, Olivia Halim, Kashvi Ravi, Niyati Ravi, and Alyssa Ma) each won in straight sets, helping to continue a trend that allowed them to defeat teams from both their own Valley Division and the traditionally stronger Mountain Division.

The undefeated regular season is the first time a Dublin High team has finished with an unblemished record in EBAL play since the Varsity Boys Basketball team accomplished the feat back in 2018.

This is also the first undefeated season in the history of the Girls Tennis program, and in fact it is believed that few programs on campus have ever achieved that milestone.

The EBAL title also ensures that Dublin has earned a berth in the North Coast Section (NCS) Team Tennis Tournament which begins on November 12th.

In fact, it is very likely that the Gaels will have a top four seed and will host through the Quarterfinals and have an excellent opportunity to qualify for the NCS Semifinals/Finals at James Logan on November 16th.”

Great job Gaels and good luck in NCS!
