Caught up in the increasingly high costs of printing newspapers and the shift by readers who are finding regional and global news on the Internet, the East Bay Business Times published its final edition yesterday, folding its operations into its sister publication, the San Francisco Business Times.
“By merging our San Francisco and East Bay operations we can deliver a bigger, stronger and more relevant newspaper,” said Ray Shaw, chairman of American City Business Journals in a story published in the East Bay paper’s last edition.
“The combination of these operations will mean a larger news package, bigger circulation and more powerful results for our sponsors and advertisers,” he said.
American City Business Journals is the parent company to both newspapers and 39 other U.S. business journals.
Shaw said that beginning next week, East Bay Business Times’ subscribers will begin receiving an enhanced version of the San Francisco Business Times. Although the San Francisco paper has operated as a regional paper covering East Bay business stories for more than 20 years, its ability to deliver strong coverage to the region will be sharply enhanced by the establishment of a 10-person East Bay office.
The office is based at Stoneridge Corporate Plaza in Pleasanton.
The newspapers’ Internet operations also will be combined, Shaw said. Online coverage will come in the form of breaking news stories on both the website and its daily updates currently sent to 27,000 subscribers.
The San Francisco Business Times will carry East Bay business news stories, produced by the 10 remaining reporters, editors and other staff members. The San Francisco paper will continue to produce special publications for the East Bay, according to yesterday’s announcement.
“The operative word here is ‘seamless,'” said San Francisco Business Times Publisher Mary Huss in the announcement. “We will operate from two offices as one unified team. Our commitment to East Bay Business Times’ subscribers is to continue delivering business stories from their region with even greater relevance and intensity.”
The East Bay operation will be headed up by East Bay Business Times Publisher Mike Consol and Editor Al Pacciorini, whose new titles will be associate publisher and bureau chief, respectively.
The East Bay Business Times has been published by American City Business Journals for the last 10 years.
