Foothill and Amador Valley high schools are the most recent Tri-Valley schools to join this year’s crop of California Distinguished Schools awardees, a designation given to schools throughout the state for their “outstanding education programs and practices.”
Both schools were awarded about a month after Harvest Park and Pleasanton middle schools were announced winners, along with Fallon Middle in Dublin and Mendenhall Middle in Livermore. Elementary schools are recognized during alternate years from middle and high schools.
Honorees hold the title for two years in a row, which is given by the California Department of Education and based on excellence in instruction and learning, as well as data-driven action including professional development and positive behavior intervention.
Performance and progress indicators on the California School Dashboard, including test scores, suspension rates and conditions and climate, are used to determine the winners each year.
State officials called the recognitions “especially remarkable” given the “uncertainty and hardship facing all California schools this past year.”
Among the other high schools on the 2021 California Distinguished Schools list were Dougherty Valley and California high schools in San Ramon and Monte Vista High in Danville.
