Las Positas College’s champion forensics team, Talk Hawk, won first place and took second in two tournaments last month.
The team attended the 2020 Off Broadway Swing, which was held virtually over the weekend of Dec. 5, in two tournaments. Overall, Talk Hawk received second place at the Nassau Community College tournament — beaten out only by Cornell University — and won first place in the other tournament held by Hofstra University.
Both tournaments were held virtually this year, allowing the entire Talk Hawk team to participate, and featured competitors from 30 colleges and universities from 15 different states. The team’s novice competitors were also able to compete in open level competition for the first time.
In a statement, Talk Hawk coaching staffer and LPC communications studies instructor Jim Dobson called his students “amazing.”
“We are certainly making a lot of noise around the country,” Dobson said. “This small community college is doing something very unique. We just went against an Ivy League school in an academic activity and won.”
With the pandemic forcing all competitions to pivot to virtual formats, some “unique challenges” such as poor internet connectivity and making technology operate from a distance have risen. But despite the difficulties, Dobson said the students are preparing for future success in a more virtual environment with the skills they are learning right now.
