Caltrans officials have confirmed that a major stretch of Highway 84, also known as Niles Canyon Road, will be fully closed between Sunol and Fremont until at least Friday following the roadway erosion that occurred amid the Presidents Day weekend rainstorms.

The California Highway Patrol’s Dublin office first reported early Monday morning that a portion of the eastbound lane eroded and collapsed down toward Alameda Creek. One-way traffic control was in effect until 5 p.m. on the holiday, but the highway has been shut down since between Old Canyon Road and Main Street in Sunol.

“To ensure the safety of motorists, State Route 84 will be closed until Friday, Feb. 23, because another storm system is set to impact the region and could bring flooding concerns,” Caltrans officials said late Tuesday. “On Friday, Feb. 23, Caltrans crews will assess the highway to determine if it safe to reopen to one-way traffic control.”

The ongoing closure has affected commuters and residents alike, forcing them to find alternative routes throughout the week. For the latest updates on the status of Highway 84 west of Sunol, go to quickmap.dot/ca/gov.
