The Foothill Falcons will face Cal High tonight, coming off a satisfying 41-37 win against Monte Vista High last weekend.
The game was televised on ESPNU, a college channel of the sports network, and broadcast nationally. Foothill quarterback Sean Mannion, who is headed to Oregon State University after he graduates next spring, had an outstanding evening up in Danville, passing for nearly 400 yards.
The Falcons are 5-2 this season, with a 50-50 record in East Bay Athletic League play. The fifth win makes the team eligible for the playoffs, with the last games of the season scheduled against Cal High Friday, De la Salle Nov. 3 and Amador Valley Nov. 13. The first round of playoffs will be held Nov. 20-21.
The Amador Dons were also victorious last weekend, triumphing over the California Grizzlies 35-24. Down 21-7 at the half, Amador came barreling back for the lead after a Cal fumble. Carson Stancil took the ball downfield 87 yards, then tossed it to Danny Petros to make it a one touchdown game. They would tie it up in the same quarter with Cal going on for a field goal in the fourth to go up by 3. But it was Amador that dominated the final minutes of the game, scoring two more touchdowns.
PJFL Broncos bounce back to beat Colts
After a tough loss, the Broncos came back strong Saturday to defeat the Colts 27-6 in the final game of regular season play in the PJFL.
The Colts came on strong scoring early in the first quarter, but the Broncos quickly answered back. With quarterback Ronnie Jones out with the flu, Cory Barrios stepped up to lead the offense following Andrew Lambert’s 10-yard kick return. It looked as if the Colts defense would stop the Broncos, but Barrios broke through for a big first down run as the quarter ended. Brian Bergman pushed up the middle for six to the Colts’ 25, and then Barrios took the snap, faked a handoff and ran in for a touchdown. Ryan Jenkins-Wilburn punched in for the extra point for a 7-6 lead. The defense made quick work of the Colts with Alex Lazzereschi’s big tackle for a loss and pressure from the D-line that upset a pass.
The Broncos took over and powered down the field with carries by Barrios, Jenkins-Wilburn, and Napoleon Kaufman whose run made it first and goal. Jenkins-Wilburn ran in for the TD, followed by Barrios’ run for the extra point and a 14-6 lead. The Broncos kicked off, but the three Alexs’ efforts ended the Colts’ possession when “Lazz” and Crepeau teamed up to knock the ball loose and Omo recovered the fumble. This led to another score following Kaufman’s 30 yard dash, Jenkins-Wilburn’s 15 yard carry and Kaufman in for the TD. Barrios again got the PAT as the half ended.
With the score 21-6, the Broncos received the ball and moved it steadily downfield, but a fumble turned the ball over. Tackles by Nick and Jake Massie, Sam Tarasow, Deangelo Ty, Frankie Banks and Luke Spiller kept the Colts from capitalizing on the turnover, and Jenkins-Wilburn finished the job with an interception. The Broncos took over at the Colts’ 33 and the O-line of Nick Massie, Jordan Reed, Craig Gin, Colby Gilbert, Alex Narvani and Cameron Beck opened a hole allowing Barrios to run 67 yards for a TD. The Colts stopped the PAT however. Jenkins-Wilburn quickly got the ball back with a second interception. Beck then carried the ball twice earning a first down as time ran out.
